You're doing good asking this question, Random. It's important, it's serious, and you not only should be careful and responsible hauling hazardous materials, you'll get your peepee smacked really hard if you mess up. We had a driver parked within 5' of the roadway so his dog could pee. A DOT officer noticed him and his placarded trailer sitting there, and wrote him a nice $2,700 citation. Man, that's an expensive pet stop. Also, a really dumb driver. Imagine - "but officer, I was only here for a couple of minutes." Right. HazMat is that big of a deal, so trip planning is really magnified. You've got some resources, but none of them will drive that load, so you're doing a smart thing to get information from experienced drivers. If you research and still can't get an answer, you can always call the DOT in the state you're questioning.

Our tunnels here in MD are prohibited entirely, but the ones along the PA turnpike are restricted only to bulk shipments, except non-flammable gas. That begs a question to me now. When you have 8800 lbs or more of ONE specific ID number, and that's the only freight on the truck, you have to show ID number placards whether the shipment consists of bulk containers or not. What I always wondered is, if not, can you still run through the tunnels in the PA turnpike?
On a different note, some hazmat classes are route controlled, but most are not. The ones that are include 1.1-1.3, and class 7. LTL companies will not haul this freight for this reason. Beyond that, I'd say just mind the road signs.Shaggy and Mark Kling Thank this. -
Here you go Mack. Easier then me trying to explain with simple text.

Far from a expert with hazmat, Vendors with hazmat to home base encounter zero tunnels.

Advanced Auto Parts is really popular here, can't say I've witnessed much auto zone, although around. Advanced drivers do the same thing.
If I had a CB i'd pipe to ask some basic questions about the local tunnels lol
Learning on the job, LTL is definitely weird in a good way. -
Thanks guys. A lot to take in. Drivers are supposed to call for a safety brief if they take on hm, I found this out today. I will get It all sorted out eventually.
Shaggy, I am working the PPG account for jb hunt. I guess we haul a lot of large containers of paint and other chemicals inside of dry vans. It surges like a tanker so we all have tanker endorsement, but I don't know if DOT requires it in this situation.Shaggy Thanks this. -
Make sure you have the HazMat book... Company should supply or can be found in Truck Stops...

Make sure you have your hazmat response book and that you know how to use it. Most DOT Officers will ticket you if you dont know how to use the book.... Also make sure you have your company's hazmat certificate with all your permits. Also a big fine. Just my 2 cents.

Also make sure when you are in the truck, the paperwork is close at hand, with the bill of lading and emergency numbers on top.
Also make sure you follow the directions about where the paperwork should be placed when you get out of the truck. You might want to reread the CDL hazmat study pages again and highlight all this.
Your company should be giving you the route to drive, make sure you write it down and follow it, don't just go by what the gps says. I believe Rand McNally gps has a place in the menu to set it for HZ loads. You need to make sure you follow the rules when stopping at truckstops, loading, unloading, being away from the truck. Of course to me paint wouldn't be as major as some of the other things which could be hauled, but treat them all like they are bad and be careful. -
Thanks everyone, all good qdvice. I do have a truckers GPS as well, i just like to look at my paper atlas a lot. Trust nothing until I see it with my own eyes.
Well Cincinnati doesn't tell you about the tunnel on i71 until you are almost in it, they have on sign a mile or 2 out that says hazmat prohibited. This is after you have already passed the loop. Good one cincy. Luckily I had no hm.
