From the companies you listed Melton and con-way are the only 2 that I would speak with,,look at boyd too.
26 cents/mile is slave wages, from 1986 to 1990 I had drivers working for me and I started my drivers at 28 cents/mile ,I know from experience that Roehl is dishonest,,
Stevens wants GI bill money, they make money off hiring vets but stevens is one of the bottom of the barrel companies,
During your first year with Stevens Transport, how many States did you drive through?

Forget that three weeks out nonsense. If the recruiter promised you that, they lied.
You will be out 5-6 weeks at a time before hometime. You will receive one day home for each week out.
The most common complaint of new drivers (and trust me, I hear them) is they aren't getting home like they're suppose to.
Then they quote this 3 week crap. I'm the one that ends up telling them the truth. Then they hate me.Sabre, TRKRSHONEY and Corporal_Clegg Thank this. -
Con-Way is starting off at $.30cpm, Cargo Transporters starts at $.38cpm, and Melton is $.37cpm. Melton seems like a very good company from everything I've researched. Cargo Transporters seems like a very good company too, but their freight is mainly in the northeast, which isn't too bad but how would it be up in that region during winter-time? They also say I'll get home every 5-7 days. Melton would be 12-14 days out, which really isn't bad at all.
Haven't researched Con-way that much yet but $.30cpm isn't all that great. Melton has much cheaper health insurance than CT, so leaning heavily towards Melton.Last edited: Aug 12, 2014

I think I am outside of Boyd Brothers' hiring area. I would be cool to work for them since my Mom's side of the family have the last name Boyd lol. I know they'd get a kick out of that, of course that's not a very good reason to work for a certain company, though

I hit 46 of the lower 48 in my first year with Stevens. Missed SD and VT. Have been to both since. I just went over the two year mark at Stevens.
The $.26 per mile is essentially a training wage, from when ever you are done with your trainer until the 6 month mark, from there it is .28 until 9 months, .29 until one year and then .30
CPM is a part of the equation but not the sum total. If someone pays you $1 a mile, but you only run 500 miles a week, how much are you really making?
I have been here two years, I am an company driver, I don't lease, last week I stopped short one day because I got incredibly sick, food poisoning I believe, so I spent 20 hrs on Medhold, also I had an issue with my APU, and two different trailers that necessitated a trip to Thermoking, (very unusual to have one, let alone two in a week), and even with all of that extraniois stuff, I drove 3306 miles last week.
So just on base pay alone, before any detention, or stop off, or any of the other money due I was over $1k for the week.
I am currently waiting to go to my shipper in Oregon to pick up a load that delivers in Ohio, so there is another 2000 miles, I am scheduled for home time the end of next week and this load puts my back on the east cost for next week so it can happen.
There is good and bad everywhere, all companies are great to some, the sake companies suck to others. Often in these forums you will get advice about particular carriers from many who have never worked for them. Try to find your answers from those who are presently employed, it will be more accurate information.
I hope this helps and good luck with wherever you decide to go. Remember we are all out here relocating freight and all just trying to get somewhere.dennisroc, TLeaHeart, buzzarddriver and 2 others Thank this. -
When Swift, Werner, UsXpress and Schneider all pay more than your company... you gotta know you're really being bent over man.

Miles are the other part.Corporal_Clegg Thanks this. -
The thing that most folks who come in this forum and complain about is the money Stevens starts at. Its so prevalent that the replies are almost rote. But what I've noticed about these persons is that a year from now, they'll have that cdl, and several trucking companies under their belts. They will also have a mile long list of complaints that they call valid reasons for their job hopping.
Those of you saying Stevens is bending us over dont get one simple fact....the money is only part of the reason we stay. Because for all the irritation that comes with Stevens, if you do your job, they do theirs.
Miles and money come. Hometime comes.
If you want to cry and complain about how its just unfair, then this industry, not just this company, may not be for you.Corporal_Clegg, Shoestring, Razorwyr and 6 others Thank this. -
Just got done reading a few posts over on Freightwipper's company's forum (Crete) there is a lot more griping over there about miles than you find here. One gentleman had just finished a 1300 mile 4 day load and that was followed with a preplan that included 46 miles Deadhead and 43 loaded, pick up one day, deliver the next. 89 miles load
As I said, CPM is a part of the equation.Corporal_Clegg Thanks this. -
