The TWIC is unnecessary unless your job requires it.
Just another money maker for another contractor...

If you have a HAZMAT endorsement, the background and fingerprint check is identical to the TWIC process, so if you don't explicitly need the TWIC, don't bother wasting your time or money.
In fact, the process is so identical that you can get a discount on the TWIC if you've already got your HAZMAT.

Are you able to get the HAZMAT before you even get your CDL?

I don't think "get" is the right word but you can definitely take the written test and start the background check before obtaining a CDL. I would recommend doing it that way when you get your CDL all your endorsements will be on the CDL including hazmat.

5 years. The cost for renewal is the same as the initial cost. The cost for a 3-year Extended Expiration Date (EED) TWIC is $60.

Who told you it would arrive by mail? That's the first I've heard of that. I was always under the impression that an in-person enrollment and an in-person activation is required.

    *edit

I'll be ######. I just looked it up. I guess they do mail the cards now. Seems kinda odd that they'd just throw a TWIC card in the mail considering what it takes to get one. I guess if it made sense the government wouldn't be behind it.

No idea how much renewal is. It expires when your drivers license expires. Why it is tied into the DL expiration I have no clue, seems silly to me.

It's not tied into your driver license expectation date. It can be if you choose so but it's not automatically tied to it.

I was informed otherwise. Do you possess a TWIC card then, and if so, is the expiration date other than what is on your license, and how long is it valid for?

    LOL.
Yeah, suddenly it's OK to send them through the mail now?
More like it's easier for the contractor to make money and not have to deal with people who have to take time out of their lives and of work to make the trek to the nearest TWIC money collection office.
