Does anyone know of any programs that help you figure out what you need to make per mile to make a profit?

Get a piece of paper and pencil. Sit down and figure your costs. Nothing fancy needed to crunch the numbers.

You need to know your Cost Per Mile. That will tell you what you need to earn.

if you do not know how to use simple arithmetic to figure your cost maybe you need to driver for someone else until you learn this,,almost anyone can drive a truck, buy a truck but if you do not know anything about finance, money management and business you need to learn all of this before you invest money and go out on a limb,,Trucking is not a business that you will survive long in with money falling thru the cracks until you get your act together,,Don't let the chrome, Smokey and the Bandit get your hormones all worked up..You must have a good business understanding to make it. Good luck go buy an introduction to business book and a money management book and study.

not trying to rag on you just pointing you is the right direction to succeed.

what is the process to figuring that out?

First, how long will i survive without knowing finance, money management and business? Second, its to late, i've already invested money and have gone out on a limb. Smokey and the Bandit, and all the chrome have gotten my hormones all worked up. Look, I've been doing this for three years now and have been doing pretty good. But according to you i guess i've been surviving off of dumb luck. Thank you for the advice, i will look for a good business and money management book to study. So, being that your not trying to rag on me and your just pointing me in the right direction to succeed. can you please help me out with the formula to figuring out what i've asked for?

    thank you.

I very good friend who was a CPA and ran a Mack dealer was my mentor when I got started,,When I bought my first truck in 85 I was paid $1.40/mile and they paid the insurance,,My friend asked me back then what a company driver made a week,,back then 10-20cnts/mile was the going rate, I ran about 2200 miles a week,,He told me to pay my self $300/week plus and other $50/week as the owner manager, Put the rest in the bank and than after I saved $20K look at all my business expenses and go from there ..Dumb luck does happen but hard work and working youself the same as you would work an employee is a must,,

Add up all your expenses , include you estimated annual maintenance cost including a future overhaul and divide by the the number of miles you drive each year. The add your wages, medical , taxes and anything else that you think that you might spend that is related to running the truck.
As for your quote prices for customers,,your cost per mile must include your empty miles.
If to run 100,000miles/yr cost $75,000/yr, our cost are 75cnts/mile But If 20,000 miles a year are empty your loaded revenue miles are only 80,000 miles
So you devide $75K by 80,000 miles and you get about need to charge a minimum of about $1.06/miles to stay in business.
when you run empty deadheading fuel is not your only cost..
Go get a book about running a business and expenses,,
An other thing you need to learn is all about contracts,,,

All good info. Just one thing to add. You do not say what type of truck you have. Pahrump's info is based on a real truck. If you are trying to do this with a p/u truck and a 2 or 3 car trailer, then lots of luck. Also, if you are getting your freight solely off central dispatch, then have fun trying to factor in your empty miles off a central dispatch move. The rates there are point to point and that's it.
