yes, they can't give you everything there

paid family health insurance, pension, something crazy like .58CPM.. paid detention of $24 per hour I heard for every hour you spent after 14 in a hotel.
everything I've looked at says ABF PAYS the most out of all LTL when you include everything.
So you get screwed out of vacation.. that doesn't take away your 5 paid sick days per year you can use. *WINK WINK*

You need that vacation, the way they run their linehaul there. You'll run ragged. Bids take awhile to get cause a lot of seniority guys. Extraboard for years and years doesn't sound fun to me. Also when you have a day off its 24hrs from 00am to 00am at 0001am they are calling you for a run. In the long run the pension is worth it but if your hoping for a life out of work from the get go P&D is a better choice there.

Yeah cause they were struggling last year and needed to cut back to save money so they took the vacation in the last contract. Don't know how long the contract is for though but this was just voted in at the start of the year.

I know some drivers at Saia in another state and they love the company. Through disciplined savings, proper investments and taking full advantage of the retirement program in non-union companies you will do just fine.

As far as extra-board goes with any company, usually those drivers make more money than the drivers with bid runs plus you don't have the boring same routine year after year. You pick up runs when there's extra freight, drivers call in sick, drivers on vacation, etc. I worked for YRC extra board and refused to ever bid on runs because I was the highest paid driver there when we compared W-2 forms at years end.

You'll make more on a bid then working the extra board since you will have times when you are just sitting at home constantly waiting to get called up unless you can come in for a few hours and work the dock and make money that way. I find your statement really hard to believe since my father works for FedEx Freight and is one of the senior drivers there at the Middletown PA facility and no one on the extra board at that place makes as much as him or any of the other senior drivers.

Not necessarily. Saia may pay you more, but you'll have to pay for your own insurance and 401k. So you probably won't see that extra pay.

It's 5 year contract. Took a weeks vacation from everyone. I went from 3 weeks to 2.
Received a 7% pay cut the first year but we get raises each year after that.
    Here's the breakdown

    Year 1.. -7% cut.
    Year 2.. 2% raise
    Year 3.. 2% raise
    Year 4. 2% raise
    Year 5.. 2.5% raise.

By year 5 we'll be above what we were making prior to this contract.

    Marky84 and Shaggy Thank this.
