I thought I read somewhere something about a process in addition to testing for the HAZMAT endorsement that is similar to the LiveScan that teachers need to go through. Can someone explain this and if it is a required thing, or if it is optional and what it's benefits are?

How does this fit in with the TWIC card and the passport requirements for Canada/Mexico runs?

Don't know about other states but here in Iowa it is live scan.Thats how I got fingerprinted for my hazmat.Getting fingerprinted is required which cost $86.50 because your prints go thru a background check.Once that's done you get a letter in the mail saying whether or not your eligible for that endorsement. You also need to fill out an application with dept of transportation which can be done over the phone, they give you a reference number which you then give to the place that's fingerprinting you then pay them the 86.50.

In California they fingerprint you twice. Once for hazmat endorsement and a second time for TWIC. My 2 cents is if you get your hazmat endorsement you should get your TWIC as well. Especially if you plan on pulling tankers.

    pattyj Thanks this.

I was planning on getting the TWIC anyway. How should I prioritize:

    TWIC
    Passport
    Endorsements
    HazMat
    Doubles
    Tankers

cant you get all your endorsements at the same time? Not sure what the fees are where you live but in California it's best to get all the endorsements at the same time. I think it costs $63 bucks to take all the tests here in California. If you only take the required written tests then want to add endorsements later it's another $63.

I am not sure. I am still on my permit until next year. I THINK (but I reserve the right to be wrong) that I can add endorsements at no charge before I test for the license????

Ahh, if you've already taken your permit test you might have to pay to add endorsements. You should take the practice tests on this site as well as get a manual for the state you are in and start reading. Don't let the title "hazmat" scare you. The test really isn't that hard. Doubles and tanker is easy as well.
