.....unions are democracy , an agreement is contracted ,then voted on by all members of the work place , if the contract doesn't get elected ,it's back to the table for more negotiation until there is an elected contract .....issues like : safety ,wages, healthcare insurance ,pensions,401k plans and seniority ,all these issues are brought up and agreed upon by everyone involved ......for Conway id say about 250,000 drivers & dockers

    Shaggy Thanks this.

If they could get Conway to sign the Nation Master Freight contract that would be great, but I think that probable will not happen. Conway will play the games the first time around and the Union will have to file charges with the NLRB. That is the way it goes down 90% of the time on the first contract. So bottom line is be ready to strike. Been there many times as a steward and business agent. Walked picket lines and when necessary thumped heads. You just do what you have to do.

I am of the same generation and I don't like unions. At best they do not affect productivity which means you have the same amount of money now spread 3 ways instead of 2. It is a shame Con-way management let it get to this because in the long run everyone loses (except the union).

the union is the drivers, so yes, the union would not lose. in the LONG run, the drivers will be better off, since management keeps taking things away, such as sick days, and their pension.

6 Speed and Shaggy Thank this.

Is Conway's revenue the same with a unionized workforce? Yes
Are non labor expenses the same? Yes

That leftover money used to go (unevenly) to the company/shareholders & the employees.

Now you have the same amount of money, but split (unevenly) between company/shareholders, employees, & now also the union.

My point is that a well managed company is better than a short-sighted company + union (& that it is a shame conway was so short sighted)
