I got a ? for you truckers regarding the professional drivers handbook that is totally thrown out the window out on the open highway when it comes to being a safe driver.
I drive to southern Calofornia about twice a year from North Carolina via I-40..during these trips I cannot get over how fast these truckers are driving and how close they are riding your tailgate..and by the way..this is at 65 to 70 mph and still they are right on your you know what. This kind of driving totally shocks me and makes me wonder why we don't hear about more fatalities due to this kind of driving.
Are the companies that hire these drivers forcing them to disregard safety and the loss of life when one of these 80,000 lb trucks plow thru you because you suddenly had to slow down for some reason.
There is no doubt in my mind that the trucking industry is more dangerous today than at anytime in the past yrs.

There was a handbook? #### where was I?

There are plenty of accidents from following too close. We hear about them so much, most don't even pay attention anymore.

As for why they do that, I think Alabama had a song about that phenomenon.

More likely a 1978 convoy style. Rubber Duck counted dangerous to authorities. This is trucking war between truckers and authorities.

I'm not saying tailgating is ok because it certainly isnt but if you are constantly being tailgated you're probably in the wrong lane impeding traffic. A lot of drivers dont understand the concept of slower traffic keep right and when you're driving all day and trying to get places and keep a schedule the people day dreaming in the center lanes holding up traffic can get frustrating pretty quick which i think leads to tailgating.

I have no problem brake checking a tailgater. Not lock em up brake check but enough to get their attention. Doesn't usually take more than one time and they'll back off.

Not sure what kind of answer you're looking for here. Can't imagine you are seriously asking if trucking companies force their drivers to tailgate but I'll answer it anyway, no. Yes, there are truckers that are bad at their job. There are people in every industry that are bad at their job. Unfortunately the general public sees a few bad drivers and assumes all truckers are unsafe. The fact is the majority of truckers are safe courteous drivers but until the bad ones are weeded out, the only drivers that are noticed by most people are the ones tailgating, speeding, or performing other unsafe acts.

yea, but the good ol days..........
I can remember running I-20 across Louisiana in the middle of the night 80-90 mph and as close as we could......

Stupid, you bet. But back in the 70's and 80's most of the guys had radios, ran a couple of log books and had to make good time........so they talked to stay awake and help each other stay out of trouble
