Hello, i've been in the trucking business for about a year now working for trucking companies as mechanic and dispatcher. A friend of mine just got his own tractor and trailer and wants to lease on with a carrier.
My question is, can i get MC and DOT without my own tractor and trailer and therefore without insurance and lease him on with me? I was thinking of purchasing insurance coverage for his truck. As you can tell we limited on cash and trying to start out small.
Thank you for you opinion and comments!

Sure, but if he leases on under your authority, then you have to go through the entire hiring process... drug test, background check, DOT inspection for the truck, etc and have all of the appropriate paperwork available for your new entry audit by the FMCSA for the both of you. Also... since you're the carrier, you're responsible for all of the insurance- liability, bobtail, cargo, etc.

    Good luck!

I think you're going to have to have insurance to get your authority active.

Yep... that needs to be done within 30-days of getting the number and paying the $300 to the feds.
