What techniques do you use to shoo dream-along traffic out from beside you if you have to move over for police/emergency vehicles on the shoulder? I have tried pressing the side, wiggling, brakes, horn (not the air horn) and boneheads just keep goofing around. What's legal and what works? I am going to wind up with a ticket if this keeps happening. Some places don't consider slowing down as being enough.

Slow down, put your turn signal on, and ride the lane divide line.

Some times you're just going to have to stay in your lane. "forcing or encouraging people" to make a hole for you is as dangerous as the alternative of staying put sometimes. Slow down what you can being mindful someone too close behind you may not realize what is going on and "evade" into the shoulder where the stopped vehicles are.

It's a matter of compromises in some situations especially in very dense traffic. Put your blinker on and slowly move over in your lane to rub the zipper to give those behind as much of a heads up to what is happening ahead as possible. But realize those near the back of your trailer may never be able to see stopped vehicles on the shoulder because your vehicle is blocking that view in slight rightward turns and they will assume you are an idiot, crazy, reckless driver ... but will do nothing to distance themselves from you, regardless

In that situation I put on my left turn signal and leave it on. Then I move over as close to the lane line as I can, without crossing it. If they don't take the hint I'll adjust speed with light brakes and use my air horn if necessary to alert the folks on the side of the road that I can't get over.

So, pulling the chain won't get me a ticket in that situation? I've avoided it because I figured a cruiser would haul out after me as soon as I went past.

Early is better, I don't care about 4 wheelers passing on right 1/2mile before...that is their ticket. Moving over early allowed everyone behind a look at what I see. Now its up to them. Otherwise I slow and ride the zipper.

That's about all you can do... the waggin' the trailer deal might feel good, but if you wag it too much, you could nail one of those inconsiderate no-account 4-wheelin' scum.

Not to mention evey state I'm aware of that has move over laws it's move over OR slow down. What I do is hit the turn signal, start slowing and move over to where my tires are rubbing the white lines.

Come to a stop if you need to.

Watch your mirrors for idiots who will try to pass you on the shoulder and will run into the cop or obstruction on the shoulder. Blow your horn if you need to warn the cop on the shoulder of danger.

This is my approach to. A signal at least indicates to the LEO that your intent is there.
What I hate is when LEO sits on the shoulder working traffic, no violator (yet) impeding traffic flow. That is unnecessarily creating hazards on the highway.
