So, in my endeavor to become an independent O/O, I have come across the most assanine piece of worthless garbage required. I have to verify MY OWN EMPLOYMENT??? I understand why a company would be required, but as an independent, it makes about as much sense as wiping before you poop. What I take it to mean is, the DOT MAKES you outsource your compliance.
DOT silliness

Just fill out and send out the forms like you would for a prospective employee. There's nothing to outsource to be compliant, although I would join a consortium for drug testing.
BigBadBill Thanks this. -
Did you give yourself a driving test yet? lol
Rooster903, MJ1657, 281ric and 1 other person Thank this. -

It is the government...and unelected bureaucrats at that. Did you EXPECT it to make sense?
-
Do we think you would be crazy enough to hire yourself to work for you ? Nobody would believe that.

but you have to have a driver qualification file, just like a company does, remember you are now both the company and the companies driverbullhaulerswife and southtruck Thank this. -
I didn't get a million of those "fake" letters/emails...more like 3 million, and they're still coming. My all time fave was one email saying my MC# and corresponding account have been compromised and I must log onto a website ending in ".rs", meaning it is a Russian based website to verify my company or my "VIN #" will be revoked. Hmmm, wonder when the DOT started operating out of Mother Russia? Yeah, I read some for a laugh, since I still have around 3-4 weeks until my truck loan funds.
bullhaulerswife and Cetane+ Thank this. -
When the DOT officer came to do our new entrant application, they needed to see the envelope where we mailed the verification to ourselves and the envelope where we returned it to ourselves. I kid you not. I used to work in insurance and in law so I am anal about reading every tiny footnote and on the paperwork I was filling out advised I needed to do this so, as foolish as it seemed, fortunately I did. I probably would have failed the audit if I hadn't.
I can really see how this would be a real safety and cause for alarm if I had just filled the danged thing out instead of mailing to myself and then back to myself - NOT! -
If you are in an accident and are unable to be at your place of business when the DOT comes in to do an audit how is the DOT expected to know what your employment background is? I thought the same thing and asked about it and the auditor flat out asked if my wife would be able to details out my safety history. Not sure about the silly mailing stuff. Verbal verification is legal and done all the time. With 50 drivers I would estimate that 40-50% of verification is done by phone when they don't respond to our emails or faxes.
Maikel Thanks this.
