I see YRCW is really starting to ramp up their hiring (at least it looks like it from an outsider). I'm a veteran and have worked union construction for a number of years. I'm looking for something different. I don't have my CDL yet. What are my best options to become a driver?

YRC will hire pretty much anything with a Heart Beat at this point in time... The have been on the verge of going under for sometime, have cut wages and nearly eliminated the pension... Guys are making money there but as far as long term not sure but, you say your a veteran so you possibly already are well vested in the construction pension? '
I know ABF has a school for new drivers that they hire and they are union... Check there website out... -
Thanks for the reply! I have read of YRCW's issues. But, I feel I don't have anything to lose and hopefully something to gain. I did apply to ABF...they only had two school openings (Chicago and Carlisle, PA). I'm on the West Coast and haven't heard back (only been about 2-weeks though). I don't see where YRCW has a school, so I'm guessing I need to get a CDL on my own dime or through being a dockworker first (nothing in my area).

If you can get your CDL either on your own or through YRC and then work for YRC as long as you are not to concenrned about the pension by all means I would say go ahead... From what I said in the previous post the guys I have talked with and know of that are with YRC are making money... I know its a pretty laid back place to work at from hear say... My uncle has been a road driver in the Chicago area for around 30 years and still enjoys going to work for them...
Good luck -

The recruiters are new. I would call back for a follow up. YRC will train you In Their yard. I enjoyed working for YRC and still miss it, but not the bs that came with it. I don't think they are good to work for now long term, but it's a great starting place, and still a good place to work. Not sure what your financial situation is but if you got a pension through your construction career, then YRC would be best. But if your looking for a second pension then go ABF, as they currently still, have it

So, your saying YRC doesn't have a pension anymore YRC does have a dock to driver program...but there actually has to be a dock job open (not many anywhere) to apply, get, etc. So, I'm guessing I would have to get my CDL somewhere else and then apply to YRC.
ABF, actually has a Road Driver School and a City Driver School...but ABF's HR said in many cases they receive thousands of applications for their road driver school (not sure how many they need, but its safe to say its a lot less then the number that apply).
I would like to start union and finish union...same company...may not be probable though. -
YRC does still have a pension, but it's not as good as the other freight companies. Last I heard they were working 4 days to get 1 day towards there pension.
ACH1130 Thanks this. -

thats incorrect, you get full credit, just at a smaller rate. every year is a full credit, its just not worth as much as it used to be. you would need 4 years to get the previous return rate, but we will see what happens long term. yrc just made money, and the regionals ALWAYS make a lot of money. either way, getting into yrc, could help you get into abf in the long run, since contractually, union freight barns HAVE to hire other laid off freight teamsters before they can hire guys off the street...
semi retired semi driver Thanks this.
