I assume you don't include logs and fuel receipts with the tax filing but you save them should your filing be challenged. I also assume you don't have to file anything with the Federal Gov't as the Fed tax would be the same everywhere.
How does running in Canada impact this?
Is there software that helps you track this?
Thanks for for taking the time on this subject, I appreciate your help.

You're over complicating it ... saving by playing the IFTA game is a chimera ... You might be able to save yourself two or three hundred dollars a quarter ... and you will pat yourself on the back because it's real and tangible.
Buy the cheapest fuel you can and give no mind to where you are in the week or when the load closes ... you can save yourself one to two hundred a week or more.
Not saying you don't give some consideration to IFTA. But it's not the driving force.double yellow Thanks this. -

Some are not concerned with it . some like myself are
That's the difference in business owners / number crunchers and hobby owner operator s in my opinion .
The facts be as they may 75 to 80% of owner operator failures are do to not knowing
1. Their cost to operate
2. Controlling variables such as Tires & Fuel which are the 2 biggest . -
IFTA to me means little, I can't control this cost. No matter what I will pay the same amount of fuel tax based on where I run and my average MPG every quarter. It matters little if I pay at the pump or at the end of the quarter, As a matter of fact, I prefer to pay at the end of the quarter. This means Uncle Sam gave me an interest free loan, lol.
It's pretty simple when you understand it, a few exceptions to that exist because of some screwed up systems a few states have. Take Indiana, yes 16 cents at the pump, but if you burn the fuel in Indiana its an additional 10 or 11 cents. A few other states do this as well. Kentucky and New York add a road use fee of a few cents a mile, there are other variables in a few states I can't remember off hand.
As was stated, the cheapest fuel is what cost the least after you deduct the IFTA taxes.double yellow Thanks this. -
