mack, having your own authority isn't always the answer. I had mine for little over 14 years and was leased on for many years prior to that.

there are several regulars on here that have done the same , fortycalglock with landstar and flightline with mercer, as myself now with mercer for 4 years.

I have found since coming to mercer I do just as well on the bottom line as I did with my own authority, and don't have near the records to keep up with, like logs, doing my own ifta, drug consortiums, etc etc, they pay the liability etc.

frankly I am much more relaxed now, I just reached an age where I was bit tired of dealing with it, 2 owned trucks and 6 leased on to me.

authority isn't a magic bullet to success. if I were younger I would do it again. in fact my middle kid just applied for authority and should be active by the end of the week. I offered for him to reactivate mine, but couldn't make him understand why having an old mc number would be an advantage, so I told him to have it. I am sure I will get sucked in to help keep things straight on the paperwork end, lol

Now the feasibility of lease vs own authority will depend largely on the type of hauling you want to do, right?

I would personally prefer to work regional.

I was wondering about that. So you can reactivate an old number? That's interesting.

Before we were married my wife ran a trucking company. Problem is though, finding quality drivers turned out to be an issue. Hopefully owning one truck and driving it myself will take care of that problem.

It would be great if we can simply reactivate the number she had.

Your story is very common, only better worded.
Work a few years for nothing, then hold out for the HOT LOAD.

six speed, I don't think that's what rollin coal post stated at all, and criticizing someone for how they word things is as bad as calling someone out for spelling on her.

I understood perfectly what rollin was saying in his post, perhaps you have a reading comprehension problem. perhaps that's why you only made it a year and half and folded shop.

he is still going and youre not and yet you got the nerve to criticize how he worded something, smh and rotflmao

People have a misconception that I sit around holding out for hot freight all the time. Sometimes but not always. I do a dry van run every week thats a round trip pays $1,300 on 441 loaded. I have other loads I haul regularly like that which pay well. I build off that one load and normally have the rest of my week figured out if not outright booked up by Monday afternoon. It took time to get business like that. Didn't happen in a year. Here's the thing about a trucking small startup or any business really. If you turn a profit in those first couple of years you can count yourself in rare company because not very many do that. It's not unusual at all to be losing money the first few years. That's why most are doomed to fail. They don't have any resources to start with.

the misconception of not understanding what you post is why many fail, they don't understand the concept you are advocating

I think my first few loads was pulling city buses on step decks from Berlin, NJ to Toronto for $2/mile back in '06-'07 time frame. I thought I'd won the lottery LOL.
