copilot on ipad was a great investment for me. gets me where im going and makes 10hr's a little more enjoyable.
the routing has always been pretty good and surprised a few of the other company drivers when they gave me directions to new deliveries and told me "your gps wont show you this way" -
Considering more drivers use gps rather then an atlas just think how much cheaper trucking schools would be if map reading and trip planning was eliminated.
Red Wide Glide Thanks this. -
Trip planning and Atlas reading are highly critical in the trucking world. You need to know the basics before you can progress and understand the reasoning behind the routing of an GPS.
Your GPS or any other electronics can quit on you. If you don't know the basic's then you against a stone wall trying to figure out how to get from point A to B.25(2)+2 Thanks this. -
He was asking for GPS recommendations, not driving instructions.GEEEEESH!!!!!!

I have owned the TND-700 and presently the TND-720. My suggestion at the present time would be to get the best 7-10 tablet u can afford and put CoPilot on it. U can get any mounting system that u need for it.
All the standalone units have a lot of bells and whistles on them that with EOBR's being mandated u won't have any use for.
The beauty of the CoPilot system is just like Google maps you punch in your route and with the help of a good truckers atlas you can rearrange the route to suit your needs. I have found that trying to get my 720 to follow the route I want to be frustrating and time consuming to say the least, when you are already on a route as it tries it's utmost to get you back on that route and the actual routing I have found to be pretty flaky at times, have also heard same reports on the other brands of standalone units.
I had used CoPilot before going to the standalone units, on a 12" laptop and although it worked good it was just too cumbersome, now with the lightweight tablets with built in gps chip I think it's the best choice.
Also with a good tablet you can do lots of other things, standalone units just gps. If you need some other information that is not built in to CoPilot, there is an app for that.
I have CoPilot on a 10" Asus tablet, Ram X mount and works great. Also CoPilot was just updated with new maps and some functions, and I put the program on my smartphone also for backup, you buy it once, put it on as many things you need to, so what could be more usefull as that.
CoPilot uses PC Miler routing, prob the same routing most trucking companies use.88 Alpha and double yellow Thank this. -

If you use the GPS as a tool like you would a map or directions, its a wonderful thing.
I'm partial to the Garmin. I have the 560 LMT. I have also tried the Rand McNally and the Cobra, The McNally was too slow and problematic for me. Had issues with routing and took too long to recalculate anything over 500 mi. The Cobra was nice,.. but a bit over complicated. The Garmin is a nice in the middle trucker specific GPS. Not perfect,.. but it does what its supposed to do.
I use a combination of Atlas, GPS, Google maps Street view/Satellite view and when in doubt,.. I call. The rest is common sense, read signs and pay attention.
