man I cant believe no one said to put your cellphone to record a video, tape the phone in front of the brake light , hit the brakes, then go back and watch the video to see if the light works.

I wedge a small peice of cardboard against the Johnson brakes bar to hold it down.....OR
I use my tire thumper wedged between seat and brake petal
I asked this question in school and these are the methods the instructer gave. We arent all idiots and we all didnt go to crappy schools.... I hate that bullcrap excuse..... -

LOL!!!!!
"run like hell to the back" LOL.
I turn on my hazards and headlights and walk around. Not a perfect test but pretty good most of the time. Can check the rest at the same time. Test for brake lights before pulling completely away from the dock.
The phone idea was good. Also perhaps a baby monitor might work. lol -
Best answer. Better yet would be, 'not quite ready for solo'. If that little detail has been overlooked I would assume there are others. WOW, hard to believe.
Here's what I always did. Turn on all lights including four way flasher, pull the trailer brake handle down and secure it if necessary. Now grab the tire thumper and talk a walk all the way around giving each tire a good look and solid thump. Watch for variation between tires and look at all the lights. When you go around the back you should see the brake lights on and the turn signals flashing. If you're not happy with that then turn off the four ways and check each turn signal individually. In the meantime listen for air leaks and look for anything that looks out of place like liquid on the ground under the truck. -
I use my tool box to depress the brake pedal, but if you are a company driver you probably don't have one of those.
allniter Thanks this. -
The new truck im driving has a 'exterior lights self test" switch. But I still check all the lights. I dont think it checks the trailer...but im not sure.... nor do I completely trust it.....
