Driver paid the tow bill. Problem solved. Driver had to sign the invoice for tow company to release. His responsibility.
2nd time he did this. No moral dilemma here. Driver pays. 1st time and 2nd. Driver did not get ok from office. May not have explained situation.
This second situation. I would not reimburse the driver and I would release him from duties and also I would have the driver sent in for a Random when the truck was towed, just to cover my ###. I required UA anytime a truck had to be towed.
My reason for releasing driver is if he is upset for not getting the tow paid, I don't want him driving my truck. He might damage it just for spite. Also this being the second time (what time frame) when does it happen a 3rd and 4th time. I see a pattern forming.
I had a driver that ran over a metal post and rocks at an exit of a parking lot. Driver side of trailer he punctured 2 tires and bent 1 wheel. I paid with card so the driver could leave but I had the driver reimburse me when he got home. He knew it was entirely his poor judgment not the mechanical failure of my equipment that caused the damage.
All damage caused by driver error is the responsibility of the drivers. Including Insurance deductible. If they didn't pay they were terminated.
Yes it was my equipment. The drivers are suppose to be professionals not amateurs. There job description did not include damaging equipment or negligent driving.

I have a few remarks:
If that mom and pop compagny is so caring for their drivers, why is it that there is no mention off the owner sitting down with the driver to discuss what happend.
The mood among most that if it is a stupid driver he should the tow bill himself.
I ask this:"have you ever seen a driver have a smart accident or incident?"
Meaning that even the smartest driver does something stupid at a certain point in his driving career.
So where do you draw the line???
When is stupid too dumb?
And those owners who complain that their driver do dumb things............haven't they heared off a roadtest??
Clear instructions to drivers with specified procedures to follow when/if they into trouble might also help to avoid a lot off costs and troubles.
My 2 cents -
Why am I think the equipment may not be in good shape?
'Stuck' isn't quite the same as 'breaking down'. -
And those owners who complain that their driver do dumb things............haven't they heared off a roadtest??
During a ROAD TEST the prospective driver is usually on his A GAME so to speak , once they are out on the road by themselves they can get careless and distracted and stuff happens that would not happen if a bit of thought was put into things before a situation occurs.

I've paid a tow bill or two in the past that were products of my stupidity. Last time was when i got my tractor stuck in my own driveway due to a whack of rain. No way I'm begging the company to pay for my screw up.

We should all strive for perfection, and accept no less from ourselves. If you can't do the job without tearing stuff up, perhaps the job just isn't for you.
