Doubles and triples (gasp) allow freight companies to take freight from one terminal to another without unloading and reloading the trailers. While triples are only allowed in certain areas, they have been under a lot of scrutiny, and some states are banning them all together. I think as the driver shortage becomes more and more serious, companies will have no choice but to implement more doubles, as there won't be enough drivers to deliver physically deliver one trailer at a time. I think you'll see in the future, more centralized distribution centers, as OTR drivers become less available.
No, the answer to the driver shortage is mass immigration. This also helps to lower wages and keep freight rates cheap which is what big business wants. Obama just let in 5 million, and more are on the way soon. Meanwhile, there has even been talk of outlawing doubles. Immigration is the answer not doubles or triples that kill grandma on her way to church on Sunday.

As with other industries as construction, meatpacking, poultry processing, warehousing, etc., the American truck driver may become the minority while the immigrant truck drivers will become the majority. It is just a matter of time.

I had no idea that one just "becomes" a truck driver by going to some CDL training facility. I am so glad that i did not attend one but then I have never claimed to be a truck driver. I can't help but wonder what all i missed by just being put in the drivers seat and sent on my way, way back then. perhaps i now know why i can't or don't call myself a truck driver.

I think every individual that obtains and uses a commercial license should pull a set of doubles(and be able to hook them up AND break them down AND back each pup into tight spots) just because it is experience under your belt.just do not be fed ex or overnight or abf or ups and run the middle lane and make me pass you on the far left or the right.keep your wiggle wagons and slow truck where it belongs-

best of luck to you OP. please don't allow my perceived sarcasm to be misconstrued. you'll understand 3 or 4 years down the road, pun intended, and chuckle regarding this thread.

Doubles / triples are great for those areas made for horse and wagon but first you've got to find a place to park

I don't want to hijack the post...but I was wondering about pup 28.5 flatbeds...I have some steady freight (only 16 pallets) and the margins are very lean. I am currently running this freight with spread 48' trailers. I try to pre-load several trailers and stage them near the delivery locations (because the receiving hours are a small window)... but I am faced with collecting all the empties and running them back to the loading location. I was thinking of running loaded short flats (singles because of weight) and then run the two short empties back for loading. Has anyone tried anything like this? Do you run into axle weight issues? The load is usually 44K...I am just an independent O/O trying to squeeze out a little profit. I tried to get approved to run turnpike doubles but they seem to only be issuing the permits to large companies....:(
