I said they sold out. I didn't say they were financially insecure. It was not a publicly traded company. It was owned by one guy, and he was getting older and just wanted to limit himself to a few trucks, one of which was a frame up restored Pete called "Gertrude" which only he drove, doing custom auto hauling. He didn't want the general freight end anymore. That is what you get with a smaller outfit sometimes. No problem. I saw it coming and had time to do my research on other similar carriers and moved over to where I am now.
Unlike the larger carriers, that are financially insecure, who will leave you 1000 miles away from home, fuel card turned off, leave the truck at a dealership or some other lot, grab your stuff, and find your way home on your own. And don't think about getting your final paycheck for some time, if ever. They do it at the drop of a hat and give no one a heads up. Smaller, one owner carriers hardly ever do this. They are people who know they have people that work for them. They may not be able to offer all the bells and whistles of a mega carrier, but they usually offer decent money, decent equipment, and time at home to enjoy a family and the company of friends. They usually service a core group of customers and don't just grab any load going anywhere.

Small company's 8 times outta 10 are FAR better than the megas. The way im treated and the relationship with my dispatcher is NOTHING like at my first driving job (for a mega) I get paid better, all the miles I can handle, hometime is whenever and how ever long I want, my truck does 75. I'd not go back to a mega unless I found a really good one. IMO prime doesn't sound bad, but I'll stick with my 30 truck company. I'm treated great and everyone including the owner knows my name, shoot I have the owners personal cell # how many drivers working for a mega can say that? Not saying that megas are bad... Some are some aren't just not for me.
lcfd15 Thanks this. -
It's generally accepted that mega's suck, but seeing how most small companies won't hire you without some experience, you got to start somewhere. Sometimes people make poor choices on their first starting company, others want to start out working on the docks at a ltl company. That's their choice. Personally I wanted to drive flatbed, when I spoke to local small companies for flat work, they all told me to look at tmc because their training was great. There is no way I would start into the transportation industry humping products on a dock, I want to drive.

I don't understand how a private owned company that is not publicly traded can have no stock growth potential.
The only people that know Crete's true financial outlook, is the higher ups, the bankers and tax man.
Even going by the number that Crete puts in the profit sharing gives us no idea to how much money they make, none.
Enjoy yourself at Knighttruckerman75103, Lone Ranger 13 and Knucklehead619 Thank this. -
I am so happy there was no internet when I started trucking.
It sure saved me from flapping my jaws online, pretending to know everything, when I probably had to find the truck manual to put the auto transmission in 'D'.Shaggy, MUSTANGGT, scottied67 and 2 others Thank this. -
Have you people read those Knight threads? Supposedly they have a sliding pay scale
Anyway I came to Crete.. pulled Shaffer reefer trailers here for about 6-7 months or so now.
I came here with LESS than one year experience and they paid me .43 CPM practical miles and I'm on pace to hit $50k a my first year (at .43 but will go to .48 if I stay here Jan 1st) here which isn't bad considering I'm pretty much a noob. Money can be made here and I am very happy to have come here because well I was making $500 a week at my first OTR job.. and that was on a 7 day week!
Is it perfect here? No.
I am a number, there's a lot of Northeast runs and my sleep schedule is always screwed up from a lot of crazy appointment times.
Then again no OTR company is perfect, at least money can be made here and that's the point of a job!tucker Thanks this. -
No clue why you address me, On my end nothing had to do with you.
Swift is the best carrier in the USA, They are big and the pay is great. Training top notch.
