Do the rail yards still close for the main holidays? Do you have to do local costumer del in Chicago or do you just go in and out of the rails in IL?

I believe that Norfolk Southern closes for Christmas and New Years, I normally take the week between the holidays off, so I am not 100% on that.
Regarding local pick ups and deliveries, there are a few customers that we pick up around Chicago (in the suburbs) that go to Green Bay, but I don't hit them on a regular basis. I know that the Iowa board has a few pick ups around Chicago, going west. But none of the pick ups are nothing to fret about.
By and large, you'll hit the rails coming in and leave the rails going to your receiver. Rarely, but it does happen, you will see both the shipper and receiver of the same load. -
I would think you have to keep moving to make good money seeing you wouldn't get alot of miles doing the short runs. So the less time spent getting loaded or unloaded the better.

It's all short runs (200 - 250 mi per trip) but in addition to the mile pay, there are extra pay add-ons for every load. Like I said before, on the books, I make 0.44/mi but with the extra pay add-ons I average 0.60-0.65/mi.
