trucks are at 62 mph
crazy nowadays it seems Shaffer (reefer) drivers get more miles than Crete -
They just ordered a ton of new Shakers...
They still have some Internationals around but not much and they aren't ordering anymore. -
can't beat thatRoadHopper Thanks this. -
As far as best paying OTR I'd say that's Shaffer.. you start at .48 and cap pay is .54 mmhm yeah can't beat that for OTR.
And for the trolls out there yes I got the miles and you don't see Shaffer drivers complaining about miles on here like other companies.
Nor am I a recruiter or biased because I just quit Shaffer lolxlsdraw Thanks this. -
Freightwipper, why did you quit?

This is just one of the major reasons there is driver job hopping. A carrier promises some great pay rate per mile, but it doesn't play out quite as great as it seems. If they gave a better perspective to a driver showing what the overall average income that a driver makes at the carrier, then a potential driver can have a better idea of what they can make. There is a lot that goes into what a paycheck actually amounts to.... the amount of miles, pay for detention as shippers/receivers, extra stop off pay, bonuses and how easy/hard they are to attain, layover pay and how often that happens, compensation for when the truck goes in the shop for repair, etc.
A carrier may have some great pay per mile, but if they don't also have some the best compensation for the times the wheels aren't turning, then their rate per mile may be just a smoke screen to get bodies in the door. This is the reason that pay per mile has never really swayed me into a decision whether to go with a carrier. It is just one of many factors, and not always the top factor. Anyone who can be wooed by only the pay rate per mile has a lot of learn about trucking. -
As an OTR company driver PAY is driven by CPM, that is the number 1 pay determining factor for pretty much all OTR companies.
When comparing OTR companies are you gotta to compare their stop pay or their CPM pay as a main factor?
Heartland advertises high pay on their trailers but I don't know of any drivers getting that number.
I came to Shaffer with LESS than one year experience got paid .43 CPM and saw $1,300 paychecks doing OTR... where else can a noobie driver see that doing OTR?
If I were to stay till Jan 1st I go to .48 and yes I get the mile with no problem.
Trainers really clean up over here.
Yes yes how many mile etc etc, over the phone all recruiters say the same thing.
From my experience I can tell you Shaffer has specific lanes and areas they mostly operate around the country. Most often when I deliver in one area I know the shipper I will go to next to pick up a preloaded trailer before even getting my preplan.
As far as all the extras here's the run down on everything for an OTR driver:
Depending on experience you'll start at .48-.51 practical mile and cap pay is .54
To reach cap pay is simply be safe and reach yearly mileage goals... last time I checked was around 114000 miles a year. Crete drivers have it higher than Shaffer drivers.
Extra stop pay is $30 but I got maybe one load every two months with an extra stop if that.
Extra pay for dispatches under 200 miles starting at an extra $15+ on top of mileage pay. There was on time I delivered a trailer about 15 miles away from their yard in PA.. all in all took me an hour of work and I earned a little over $40 for it.
Breakdown pay is $100 after 12 hours and $100 there after, on my last breakdown which didn't last 12 hours I did get paid a prorated amount.
There's that so called profit sharing.. I don't remember all the all the details but it comes to an extra few thousand dollars a year. It didn't relate to me because to get all of it you have to be to the company drivers for a few years to receive all of it.
Starting Jan 1st there's automatic detention pay after 2 hours.. I haven't seen the number in number but people within the company has told me it's going to be $15 an hour.
Layover.. well I never experienced a layover due to no freight. Shippers screwed me over forever a couple times waiting forever but I got paid for that.
Health insurance is $25 a week for $1000 deductible for personal insurance.
Also you can bring the truck home which my first company I worked for didn't allow.
Research all you want.. compare and compare some more, I have before I came here and this is the best paying OTR company I found and I haven't been disappointed with my paychecks.
With how much people complain about companies good luck finding drivers complaining about Shaffer on here.
There's transam dudes with experience getting paid .32, Stevens around the same and even lower.. while out on the road a CR England driver told me he was getting paid .29 CPM with over a year experience and was fighting for miles. I showed him my paychecks and he quit and joined Shaffer a few months after that.
As far as simply pay goes doing OTR you won't be disappointed here. If you get a garbage load that doesn't mean you have to take it.. communicate! Extra time on the load? Run your butt off and T-Call it at company yard. That will only happen if you communicate but they will work with you.
Is it perfect here no...
You're a number here.
The trucks are cheap.
Tons of Northeast runs but I do get out, I've been to Colorado and Florida a few times already.
But I reached and exceeded my $ income goals here so it's all good.xlsdraw Thanks this. -
Not that Shaffer was bad... but it's still an OTR company driver lol.
I could get into LTL start at around .55 be home every weekend, sleep in hotels not a truck, get paid for on-duty time.. ABF for example pays for your family health insurance, paid personal/sick days and get a pension! Lets not forget it's simply drop and hooks at terminals... NO shippers and receivers. No loads while at the company hotel? Okay I get paid over $20 an hour then waiting.
OTR drivers overall I believe don't get paid what they're worth.
I can do better and I can happier doing something else. That's why I'm leaving.xlsdraw and Lone Ranger 13 Thank this.
