Hmm, I always thought it was the tractor that was called a goat or yard dog. If the driver's of those tractors are being called that, maybe they have right to have a bad attitude. "Oh Mr. Hosteler, sir, would you please, (if it isn't too much trouble,) go get in the yard dog, and get some work done."
Hey striker, as someone who spent 5 years going to the yards in Chicago, that doesn't surprise me at all. It's like you have to do their thinking for them. They are MASTERS at doing only what they are told to do.
I think it is called "passive resistance." It isn't that they don't know exactly what they are doing. They hate their jobs, they are bored out of their minds, and it gives them a chance to screw with people.
There are an awful lot of "Wallys," (from Dilbert comic strip) out there.![]()

When working the terminal, Also do yard jockey, We have outside carriers. We have 32 doors and it's clearly marked on the building and the dock lanes on the ground numbering. We aren't playing tetris in the yard such as UPS ( yard jockeys ) always 1 OTR driver dumber then a box of magnets. Can't read numbers or back up a 53' with more real estate ahead then a CFL playing field.
Yard jockeys know their yard. It's their job. Learn the basics of their yard. It's their kingdom, Follow the simple rules.
Can't follow the simple Instructions, Expect a attitude from them. Yes they can dictate your in/out time ( drops to finding empties ). They are friendly with all the staff ( receivers, loaders, management ) Not a person to pee off and impossible to prove it.
My younger brother was yard man for a couple years, Super mellow guy. He knew about every trailer in the yards. upwards of 300.
Pee him off and expect to collect detention or never find your empty. Like he always told me, He has a job to do and so do drivers. except he has plenty of influence of what his yard duty was or forgot. Follow simple instructions, was good to go from him.Last edited: Dec 14, 2014
