Kinda hard to ask the question in a way that makes sense so I'll just give you guys an example. If I am in Cheyenne and want to go to Dallas my Garmin, 3 year old truck GPS, will route me on I 25 to Denver then want me to take 70 to 35. I do not wish to go this way. Now, what I would like is a way to have it route me the way I want, that way I get total miles quickly. This would also be useful in winter when I know a storm is over a certain route. I hope this makes sense.

If you add way points, from the route you want to take. It should route you more properly. If I am understanding you right. You can add up miles using your atlas pretty easily with the city to city

Yeah but I'll have to keep adding while driving to keep checking the miles to go, hard to do with an Atlas while driving. Plus, if I wanted to add miles I wouldn't buy a GPS.

I never used a gps, just used Google maps. It would allow me to drag the route where I wanted and then I would write down the directions. Kept my notepad on my dash and just followed the road signs.

Came in handy when I needed to mark a custom route for OS/OD loads

I think it would be awesome if there was one that did that... But I think until the GPS picks up the route you want, you will have to manually add/subtract.

I was hoping as I haven't shopped them for years. It's really the only feature I want. Most of the time my GPS and I agree and of course I never let it lead but it would be awesome to be able to have multiple routing options.

Other than updating maps they really haven't improved much... I just upgraded to the rm 530 it has a quick route planner on it. ( I haven't messed with it, my deliveries are all within 50 miles of each other) but I still do way points to get going the right direction.

Oh it does give me a multiple route choice... That is actually helpful.

I mean more than just quicker time or fewer miles.

In the garmin you have to use the trip planner feature for that.

Enter your waypoints from your map planning.

That way you can avoid that pesky recalculating due to a one minute backup into car mode.

You can hammer detour. That sometimes works on a garmin.

I use Google for multiple routes for cars and see if I can legally shave off a few miles.

If all else fails you can use the online promiles calculator uship car/truck route & truck stop guide point to point routing.

....or just use a paper map & notecard until you get to the city.
