KMac knows whereof he speaks. This is one industry - maybe the only one - about which a new-entry employee really knows very little before getting into it. Most non-truck company CDL schools teach one how to pass a test. A company's own CDL school adds a bit of learning to do it "our" way, but it's still focused in passing a test, no matter how long it is.
Only when a driver gets the keys to his own truck and loads does she learn what that company really does and how. It's then that the new driver learns to like or dislike both the career choice he's made and the company with which she started. The search is on to find the balance KMac and his friend have found. Some find it OTR, some regional, some local driving a day cab.
To my way of thinking, it's like making the military a career; it's easy to say "I'll do 20 and retire." It's quite another story to stay that long. Whatever individual choices are made in trucking, the majority bail during their first year. Like the military, there really is no way to prepare for this before doing it.
Congratulations and welcome to the Stevens Transport family.

Now for another update...
In my last update, my brother had decided to start trucking with me and we were going to try being a team for some company. So I told Stevens we were using our GI Bill (we were both in the military) to pay for US Truck Driver Training School and we would be looking at a different company as a team.
Well... my brother choked at the last minute and decided not to go through with it. So I'm back to solo (I wouldn't want to team with someone I don't know). I'm in week 2 of my truck driver training and Stevens Transport graciously allowed me to "come back" to their company. My CDL training is just not being sponsored by Stevens Transport. I just got an email saying I was accepted and to call them to set up an orientation date. It's about 6:30 pm right now, so I'll call them tomorrow before my class starts at 8am.
I can't wait to actually get on the road!Chinatown Thanks this. -

Friend of mine been with Stevens a few months and starving to death. He's a hard charger too, not the least bit afraid of long hours and hard work. Just heard from him this week and he's suffering financially.
If you really want a reefer company, keep looking. Don't waste that good private CDL school.
No company is perfect, especially just starting out, so check out some more where you can make more money per week.
Halvor Lines - has a reefer division
Navajo Express
Magnum Companies
Freymiller
Decker Truck Line
Pride Transport
CPM doesn't mean much if you're not getting the miles.
