I did ok this year running short, about 71K. I'm looking forward to 2015. Our barn has 26 drivers (total), 10 bid 1 flex on line haul. I'm #9, but that is going to change here pretty quick.

Screamed at the one woman are you going to do any work!? Local guys all cracked up at me. Think they had been there & done that. -
I run from St. Louis (XSL) to LaSalle, IL (XLA) everynight. It's 454 miles. I get 2-4 hours each night on the dock. I gross 1900+- a week. Last year I was put on top pay midway through the year and came out at 88,500 for the year. I should have no problem breaking 100 this year. If you have a good run, PM linehaul is worth it. But a lot of Chicago terminals have crappy runs. I think there is a run that is 22 miles. You are basically a dock worker with a CDL. I don't see how those guys do it. I'd work somewhere else. Just giving you a heads up to check on the type of runs you will be getting before you join Conway. A LOT of guys get hired on in XSL and quit real quick because of the dock work they have to do rather it be in XSL or XSW which is our shortest run at 152 miles.
double yellow Thanks this. -
Ryan0789M you are so right. Conway has a high turnover rate in the chicago area. I highly suggest anyone potentially getting on with them to do their homework... It's very important to know what you're going to be running before signing any form of a contract. You have to be very careful because conway tends to only reveal your run etc after signing the contract. At some terminals they hire student drivers, I feel bad for those guys because management keeps the fact that if they quit within a year they owe 3000 bucks on the hush. Ask every question possible before signing anything. If you can get on a P&D run go for it but keep in mind a lot of people prefer days so chances are that you'll likely get a noon start time as a newbie which consist of lots of dock work and filling in (pretty much whatever needs to be done around the terminal to get your 8 hours) depending how busy your terminal is you could struggle each day to get your full 8 hours. PM linehaul as stated above pays the big bucks. If you don't like working the dock you're not going to enjoy conway, depending on the terminal and the run available, you could be mainly working the dock with very little driving for quite a few years until you build up seniority.

Mack E-6,
I worked at the Seaford, De. terminal before retiring from Con-Way. It was a far cry from the Orlando, Fl. terminal. The drivers bids seemed like half linehaul and half city p & d. I had a crazy bid that was very hard to handle. I started @ 0400AM to break inbound freight, sometimes do a local run and then go home but return at 1600PM to unload and reload the p/u freight to go to the FAC's. Seaford, De. ran to Richmond, Va, Carlstadt, NJ, Hagerstown, Md and another that I do not remember. I had to retire because I couldn't keep up the pace of mostly dock work and split shift times and being 58 I couldn't do it for much longer. Thanks for mentioning Seaford though as it brought back memories. -

I run 350 miles a night and pound the dock and live on the via. No via.....more dock time. 14 hours a day, everyday.
paul_4lp Thanks this.
