I wouldn't call the guy a dirt bag. He could have just left when it first happened, but he waited around and offered to pay for the mirror. Probably trying to keep it off his DAC report. I would have cut the guy some slack and taken the cash.

As I read the OP he didn't offer to pay for the mirror, he offered to to pay the OP to lie about the circumstances of the damage. He then went back to his truck and made a conscious decision to leave without exchanging the pertinent information...

Sorry, that qualifies as a dirtbag.

Personally I have no respect for those who take no responsibility for their actions. My guess is this is not the first incident he has had and that is why he wanted it kept quiet.

I witnessed a hit at the Benson, AZ Love's. Busted up the fender mirror. Guy tried to take off but the driver and I flagged down an Arizona DPS officer who was fixing to take a spin through the lot. He forced the driver to come back. They ended up settling for a cash payment between them and no report or citation for hit and run.

KMAC is right. He didnt offer to pay for the mirror. He offered me cash to lie about it. I am a seriously bad lyier. So I dont do it. Whatever the amount he was offering was not enough. Sorry about his DaC... but I have my own reputation and conscience to live with.

Well someone else, said, walk with him to his truck, then get the name, and truck number. I can see the frustration in the o/p's mind for this having happened. I have had someone damage my trucks over the years and I have been warned by my company(s) dispatchers over the years and even my company drivers, to stay away from some truck stops, as they are notorious for hit and runs.

On the one hand, at least the guy did stay to talk with the o/p. But then again, I am sure he saw the witness as well. I have had mirrors broken too, especially the convex ones I am assuming the o/p speaks of, and they are cheap to replace, and very often, the brackets are easy to make relatively straight again.

So as you, I too would have taken the money, as the damage was not (in my opinion) a major job losing one at that. some of us have been around a long time, and know full well that some drivers make mistakes. This was NOT a catastrophic one either. Once repaired/replaced, I hardly believe the company would have even noticed anything way out of whack with the mirror bracket.

And I speak from experience with this, and here's how. Many years ago, I was south/west bound on the lower level of the G.W. Bridge, as this was before the 9/11 attacks. I was entering the curve downstairs, when a Canadian trucker decided to pass me on/in that curve. He hit my drivers side mirror, the westcoast/convex set up.

He bent the brackets, but did not break the mirrors! We pulled over, (I had another company driver behind me, and he saw the "hit"), as we all pulled over the Canadian driver said he was sorry. Well all 3 of us un-bent the mirror brackets, (the Canadian driver doing most of the work) and shook hands, and went on our merry way. At no time were words ever spoken by me or my co-worker, or did my company EVER take notice, of the slightly bent brackets. Wow, that happened in I believe 1994.

Oh and by the way, "rubbing of mirrors" going across the G.W. Bridge, especially going north bound, just out of the toll plaza, where you had what 16 toll lanes going down to what 4 lanes of travel? made for interesting moments of heart pounding adventures.! (my indecent was south bound, lower level.)

The way I look at my situation was sure, I could have called in an accident or incident, but the paperwork involved would have been too much for such a small thing, even though many of not ALL companies make a big deal out of an ant hill.

This is true, we all have our reputations to uphold. Ok, so he was offering to pay for lying, but that money was still going to go for another mirror. I mean you know, there comes a time when you gotta just say, "screw it", it ain't such a big deal. Leave it at, someday the driver will hit someone, bad enough and no matter what all the "offerings in the world" will not get him out of trouble. You only have up to a year in this industry, many of us have more, sometimes you just gotta choose your battles, instead of being head strong. As someday, YOU TOO WILL screw up, and THAT driver, might just cut YOU some slack. Think about it. It happens.

I was at a truckstop near Chicago one time and a driver knocked on my door wanting me to witness a big drug deal going down. People kept going to a certain reefer trailer and the driver was handing them something. I told the guy, "I don't give a (blank) just do what you feel you have to do, but leave me out of it." He called the cops and the story is, all those guys going to the back of the reefer trailer worked for the same company and were running together. They all had their food in a cooler in the trailer and that's what was being handed to them; it was their supper! So, Mr. Delta Force/CIA made a fool of himself.
Anyway, don't sweat the small stuff. We don't know what a driver may have going on in his life that's stressing him. We should all give each other a break or some slack at times because in the big picture, it just doesn't matter.
