So I've been looking into buying a truck and I'm very confused by the registration options. I was reading another thread about Apportioned plates and assumed that's what our Tractor plates were as that's typically all I ever see on trucks.....until today when I saw a plate that actually said Apportioned on it. What is a tractor plate and do you have an option that can save you money as far as Tractor vs Apportioned? DMV website doesn't describe what the different plates are for. Also a little confused with permanent plates. If it makes a difference I'm pretty sure I'd only be running the Mid Atlantic states.

You have to go the Virginia DMV site for the application (download and fill it out, and you can fax it back. You fill it out and send it in, and once its approved you can go in to your local DMV to pay and pick up docs. You can't do in the DMV. They have a hotline that will help and walk you through.

You have permanent tags where you don't have to put stickers on them or you can get regular tags. You also have to pay heavy use tax (usually about 500.00 and change) before you register. It can be done online (through a 3rd party service www.expresstrucktax.com/ for around 10.00) or at your local tax office.
I know some drivers who don't go with permanent tags and claim that they don't pull over a certain amount of weight to save money (most of the loads you'll pull will be over the weight required to pay the full tax.). The tax form you will fill will be your 2290.

When you fill out the IRP application it will ask you what states you plan to run and estimate you plate fee. There are suppose to be changes next year where it will be easy to add on states as you go. You can get yourself a WEBCat online account and make changes as necessary.

Sorry to run on but the process is somewhat involved. The hotline will be a big help in filling out the app as well searching through this forum. I was able to get some of my questions answered here as well.

Beginning January 1, 2015, there will no longer be the option of only having certain states on your base plate (cab card). Everyone will have 48 states and Canadian provinces on them. This is according to my state IRP office. From my conversation with them, the new plates will be calculated similar to the way IFTA operates. We only pay a fee for those states in which we run. However, we will have an apportioned plate to cover all states. That makes it easier to take a load to a state that is not on your cab card without having to add the states. I need to renew my base plates in a couple of months, so I will find out how it works for certain. You need to check with your state IRP office and see what is required to make you legal with them.

I use estimated miles and allways get all 48 states even if I never go there but they look at miles i drove in the past year and give my money to states i drove in.

I did that for years, but took states off my cab card that I wasn't traveling. It did reduce my costs, but not as much as I would have expected. I received an email today reminding me about renewing my new cab card. I am anxious to see if my base plate will cost less this year with the new changes.
