Hey guys. I'm running a '94 KW that has a 3406B mechanical. Looks like I will need to go over to EOBR's and I really don't want to retire this truck over something so whimsical.
What are you guys doing?

The Big Road(TM) smartphone application is being used by some.
I don't think it is tied to an ECM, but just something I would look into if I were in your position. I sat next to one at a rest area on US30 in OH, and nothing was visible either outside or inside the cab. -
it has to be tied into the engine to be eld compliant. I use eclipse logs with gps locator, not eld compliant.

Our company uses XATA. It's on a smartphone and compliant

J.J. Keller has ELD's/EOBR's that use iPads and iPhones. Personally, I would wait to do anything, only because the FMCSA is still formulating the final rule and no telling what kind of nonsense will come out of that regarding logs and pre-ECM engine trucks. I did a quick look at the products J.J. Keller has. The tablet or phone seems like a well thought out platform. They claim install is a one time fee of $199 and is compatible with ALL vehicle classes. If anyone would know if it meets regs, it would be Keller themselves. You can see it and compare packages here.....

They also have apps that are Apple and Android based for tablets and phones that save on buying equipment. The app records vehicle movement via GPS.

I used Xata when I was with Quality Carriers. It has a box (GPS locator/Bluetooth) on the dash that plugs into the truck diagnostic/ECM portal. Communicates with the smartphone. Still goes into the truck ECM.KANSAS TRANSIT Thanks this.

My truck has no ECM

Why can't us owners of trucks without ecm use a tachograph like the old days if required to use babbysetting equipment.
-
FMCSA is going to set what is allowed and what is not. There are already electronic logging platforms available that meet regulatory requirements now even for older non-ECM engine trucks. J.J. Keller, for one, has that kind of thing available already. Now it just remains to be seen how this plays out after the FMCSA gets done with it's nonsense. If my money was on a bet, I would guess that what is already available for non-ECM trucks will carry over to any final regulation.

those use the data port in the cab off the ecm, the ones that us ipad, smartphone or tablet do it with a Bluetooth that's sends signal from a box plugging into data port.
jj kellers site is a bit confusing because it says they have one for all type vehicles, but they don't mean non-ecm , they mean all as in pickups, 6 wheelers and class 8.
mercer has went to this unit and our guys with non-ecm trucks cant get one at the moment. we have the option at the moment to put one in with mercer covering all costs, if we wait until may,2016 we have to pay for it. not a reg just a policy they decided to implement.
