When a driver with a Commercial Driver Instruction Permit is driving with another driver that has a CDL, technically speaking, what is the CDL driver's status - off duty, on duty/not driving, must he remain awake or can sleep behind the permit driver? Do permit drivers need to keep logs?

Flybynight041 and Lepton1 Thank this.

So on a 10 hour run if the permit driver drives for 5 hours, from the CDL driver's perspective essentially it is no different than if CDL driver drove the full 10 hours?

So other than good karma, does the CDL driver get any benefit from splitting the driving with the permittee?
-
Example, permit driver drives full 11 hours and then cdl driver can drive 3 before his 14 hour clock is up. -
Or cdl driver drives 11 hours then goes on duty while permit driver drives 11 but that will eat the cdl holders 70 up quick

Lines 2 and 4 .ON Duty and ON Duty not Driving is counted together and regulated by the 14 and 70 hour rule. The 11 hour rule only applies to line 3 on duty driving which clearly states no more than 11 hours driving during a 14 hour period.
? Can a driver work on duty line 4 past their 14, YES. but they must take in account the time and not return to on duty status until a 10 hour rule has been satisfied, Recently there have been some changes to the 34 and the mandate for 30 min break.. so be sure to get with the DOT on that issue.
A CDL Permit Holder may only drive while accompanied by a CDL Licence holder, who is in the truck logged on line 4 "on duty not driving".
Hope you find this helps!p47 Thanks this. -
This sounds like the exact kind of case for CR England's request-for-exemption status with the FMCSA... but maybe I'm wrong.
