Yes, I have helped many people that way, and most are good people, you will meet the occasional freeloader, but you just drop them off at the next truck stop.

I have picked up truckers that were broke down a took them to the nearest exit where they could get help (tires shop, mechanics etc.). That is legal accoding to the FMCSA, although you are supposed to note it in your log book. Yeah, right. As far as having anyone else in the truck, except someone approved by your company, it is illegal and you can get a ticket. Example is the bedbuggers that pick up their labor for doing a move or giving another driver from your company a ride to get a truck. The cops can and will remove the passeneger from your truck. Some companies will come down real hard on you if you are cited for this. As said above you don't know what kind of illegal stuff thay could have with them.

I have never driven a truck.

With my own car, I do NOT give rides to strangers.

In my younger days I did do this. However, without going into details, I learned through the "school of hard knocks" that it is very risky giving rides to strangers.

I can see both sides of the truck drivers giving hitchhikers and strangers a ride.
I personally would call for help for the stranger, (tow truck, law enforcement, etc.), rather than take the chance of having a stranger inside the truck with me. If the hitchhiker or stranger does not harm or assault you, they can still leave illegal contraband inside the truck, without the driver knowing about it. The truck driver could end up going to prison for the illegal contraband, if it is caught by any law enforcement officers during an inspection or search.

Aren't the points on the CSA like crazy high for having an 'unauthorized passenger'?

Carrier im with now it is a big no no. Previous carrier it was too unless u were moving them to safety. U had to let dispatch know and had to dump them at first safe location....i.e. Truck stop or rest area etc

    No way.
There are certain circumstances where I would consider making exceptions, but haven't yet.

Nah, unauthorized passengers are only one point, lots of things are much worse.

Texting while driving a CMV can get you 10, and failure to wear a seat belts gets you 7.

    Dedicated officer?
The law is the law, -- no exceptions?
Don't confuse 'em with the facts?
Overwhelmed with the responsibility of forcing Big truck truck drivers to comply with safety rules and/or laws
in cooperation with the F.M.C.S.A.'s relentless quest to, "help make sure everyone gets home safely"?
And enjoys the powah vested in 'em?

I wonder how many unauthorized riders are hurt, severely injured or killed as a result of ridin' in a Big truck
each year, and how many Big truck truck drivers are hurt, severely injured or killed by the unauthorized
riders that they've allowed to ride in the Big truck they're drivin'?

I wonder how many pedestrians walkin' on the shoulders of highways, minor and/or major, are hurt, severely
injured or killed as a result of bein' struck by a motor vehicle?

Then again, ------- could it be, ------ that the duty bound State cop was stalkin' the broke-down motorist just
waitin' for the opportunity to pounce on 'em and issue a citation for walkin' on a vehicular highway, ------
when his plan was interrupted by a rouge Big truck truck driver stoppin' to render assistance to the broke-down
individual, --- there-by removin' the necessity of walkin' on the highway, preventin' a potential safety related issue,
which also prevents the monetary income that the citation would have generated, --- frustratin' the officer for
bein' thwarted, so much so that he came to the conclusion that SOMEbody's gonna pay, --- and the law-breakin'
Big truck truck driver who broke the law to prevent bones and a law from bein' broken, - takes the hit to the wallet, .......
instead and/or in place of the original victim?

Gotta admire someone with powah in possession of a disposition like that.
I wonder how well they handle sleep?
    Count sheep?
And motorists who need to be sheered?
    :smt112

    Define "crazy" Ebola Guy.
Some would opine that it's crazy that it rates at all as a safety issue.
    Who's safety?
The powers that be the Federal Motor Carrier SAFETY Administration insist that, .....
"Safety compliance means safer roads for everyone". So, ......................
to save us all from ourselves and in our interest, those guys much wiser invented a system they call "Safety Measurement System",
(S.M.S.), to, "assess compliance by analyzing safety data from roadside inspections, crash reports and investigations to identify and
intervene with motor carriers that pose the greatest risk to safety", which they claim, "helps drivers and motor carriers, including
owner-operators, improve safety performance and compliance to help make sure everyone gets home safely."
To achieve the desired results all one must do is comply.
So simple, ---- even a caveperson could do it. :biggrin_25523:

    That's comforting.
Bein' a safety-minded good samaritan could, potentially, only cost said samaritan one point for their noble effort.
Lend a helpin' hand, --- just don't get caught. :biggrin_25524:
    That ain't safe.

Are ya beginnin' to doubt your doubt? :biggrin_25525:

    Maybe sometimes, but not always.
I have a whole list that you could dig up.
    Is there a limit?
    :biggrin_255:

    Case in point, ---------
When this thread began the CSA-SMS hadn't been implemented yet.
I wonder if that addition to the equation would change any opinions and/or responses to the question
concerning giving rides to unauthorized people?

I'm thinkin' that hot chicks in Daisy Dukes
    is an exception t
    o the rule.
    Pass that up?!
    :smt108
    Who could/would do that? :smt102
    That'd be un-American.
    :salute: :laughing4: :smt037

    And the thread continues, ------------------- ........................ :walk::mrgreen:

    Happy New Year 2015, Y'All !.
    :smt111 :occasion9:

But you know after reading some of these post, and thinking about it, in all reality, Now -a- days, I probably would not give anyone a ride simply because of the way people act and behave today, you just really cannot trust anyone like you did back in the day. So Hitching is not gonna happen, need a ride? get a bus ticket..
