I tried that about 9 years ago. Sitting parked with the engine off a gaming desktop computer would drain your batteries in about two hours. A laptop I could power for a day and a half. I did switch to a gaming laptop and was happy with that. You may want a top of the line, but a lot of the middle of the road laptops are great for gaming. Just make sure they have dedicated video and not the integrated ones.

I bought my laptop top of the line 4 years ago that includes a blu ray player, 1 gig vid card etc and it still works great even though its been bouncing around in my truck for a couple years, I keep it stored on the bed when im driving. I also use a surge protector cord with my inverter for all my electrical stuff.
Shaggy Thanks this. -

my hp laptop is kind of just sittijg around at the moment. i swapped out the 250 gig drive for a 1TB. had to load windows 7 on it. for some reason the actual manufacture software won't load it up.
1500 watts is absurd, my boy gets by just fine with his 450 watt desktop. playing WOW. he has 16 gigs memory and a 1 gig memory vid card.
what kind of game requires 1500 watts.
i'm old fashioned. and don't play games. i have much better things to do with my time. like ride a motorcycle or go fishing.Electronic Cowboy Thanks this. -
1500 watts is just a part of the available power I have access to, but with vid cards these days (like a GTX 980) has around 4 gigs. If yer running a dual setup, well, quite a monster.
I used to do all that outdoor stuff. I just dont have time for it anymore. At least hunting and fishing. I need to go to the range again someday. -
Power supply isn't a problem. All computers run off 5vdc. The power supply just converys 110vac to 5vdc and works fine off an inverter. I've been doing this for over 35 years before getting into trucking. If you buy a new desktop the disk drives park themselves when the PC is off. I wouldn't run it when your driving. I have a LOT of experience with desktops in mobile environments and have had no problems.
If your handy you can build yourself your own system in a very small enclosure about 8"x8"x5" and screw it to a wall or inside a cabinet. Mount a 21" monitor that extends out and locks into place. Blue Tooth wireless keyboard and mouse.
You can also go with a solid state disk drive and run the system while you drive with no problem unlike a spinning disk drive.Electronic Cowboy Thanks this. -
A little clarification.
A few of my LTL brothers on here can attest too, I'm a big Desktop nerd. Geek out on the latest and greatest anything desktop. Never owned a Laptop, That's slighlty above console gaming and horrible bang for the buck. ( turning off my PM inbox )
Only reason why I wouldn't bring along a desktop in a big truck, Not because of the power issues ( Can run 3/4th generation Core I's and very soon even less energy, The Broadwells , GPUs,DDR3 and SSD's very efficient, forget about SLI )
The Airflow and Vibration and anything less than 51" plasma or triple monitors is a waste of time/money in a truck/home use
In the end, It's a very stupid idea.Liquid cooling ? Really dude in a big truck?
Get another cheap laptop, Setup a kickstarter to fund a $300 wally world purchase.
The 900 series is very efficient and requires less power ( 100 watts less then the 700 series ). Monster?
This site is getting more hilarious.Last edited: Jan 4, 2015

I got a MacBook Air 13" two years ago for a grand.
It still looks and works brand new and,to tell you the truth, I was not babying it at all it even fell off the bunk a few times.
Even scratches disappear after simple cleaning with a water and cotton cloth.
The only thing went bad is the charging cord its all raped still works, but I got a new one on eBay($40) for home,so I don't have to unplug it from the converter when I take computer home
I"M HAPPYShaggy Thanks this.
