Hello everyone! I would just like to say thank you.
I have been finding a lot of useful information on this site and some well thought out advice and I appreciate all the input from the members who take the time to post.
I just finished a 6 month CDL program in Pittsburgh and would like some advice on which path to take early on in my career.
I have a few offers on my plate already which are:
Public transit (Driving in the city)
GFS (Gordan Food Service) I heard its very hard work which I'm not opposed to and actually wouldn't mind moving around rather than just bumping docks.
Oil field driving a water bottle
TMC or Roehl dedicated route home weekends.
The only thing that is holding me back from trying to experience OTR driving would be my part-time career in the Air Force Guard. Its 1 weekend a month and 2 weeks a year. I basically would never be home, and when I was home I would be pulling my guard duty.
If you could maybe throw some advice my way on what to expect or maybe what you would do if you had the chance I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks in Advance!
Just got my CDL today, need advice please!

Roehl third.Tonythetruckerdude Thanks this. -
Go with the GFS job , you should be home daily , maybe a one night layover once in a while. Don't know how they pay , but I worked for GSF ( Golden state foods ) for over 30 years....made a great living and only worked 3 to 4 days a week , ( 12 to 16 days a month ). It's a work-out to say the least , but if you work work smart you'll remain in great shape , make great money , and be home like a regular Joe .

I would say GFS,i used to work for Sysco and it was a great job, great pay, home every night. But it was hard work especially in the snow. Two wheeler was not fun at all.
Tonythetruckerdude and Steelcity Thank this. -
Congrats on the CDL feels good dont it! I got mine beginning of last month.
Advice? Well the PT city job I would think you would be driving the same route over & over could you take that?
GFS- I hear the same about hard work same with beer trucks.
Oil Field- after being out in this vary cold day today, first day on home heating oil job, how would you like to be out in it all day?
TMC or Roehl they have dedicated routes?
I know TMC is flat bed and the same as above goes for it climbing & tarping in all kinds of weather.
Roehl is it drop & hook or do you have to push carts off the trailers?
Have you checked with any of them about taking the time off needed to fill your obligations with them and what did they say? I know they have to give you it off right?
Sorry not much help.

The thing is the oil field job would pay well too. But i am telling you go to GFS. It will be worth the pay. If i could go back to Sysco i would.
Tonythetruckerdude and Chinatown Thank this. -
public transit they have the best benefit package you will find. and they will not make a big deal about home time. that is my 2 cents worth lots of luck on your choice
