With your hand on the steering wheel at the 6 o'clock position and wheels straight, you rotate the steering wheel so your hand is now at the 9 o'clock position...

Your hand is now on the left side of the steering wheel, the wheels are pointed to the right because you rotated the wheel clockwise, and if you back up the trailer will go to the left.

Limit your steering wheel movements to no more than 90° when doing this exercise, and it will start to cure the habit of oversteering.

Okay, all jokes aside. I get it. It's just a strange piece of advice. Should be used only if a driver just sucks at backing and cannot improve to save his life. This advice can confuse rookies. Surely you see that?

Besides, I'm betting ol' J got this down within 24 hours of that particular post. Right, J? Betcha, betcha!

In fact, this is how backing is taught at many schools. You got a truck? Try it, the technique works quite well.

Not true (and sarcasm noted.) With your hand on the bottom, moving your hand to the left moves the trailer to the left. With your hand on the top of the wheel, moving your hand to the left moves the trailer to the right; as you said...opposite the direction of the wheel.

Both techniques do the same thing; the only difference is hand placement and remembering whether the trailer will move in the same direction or opposite direction of your hand movement. Some people have an easier time with one than the other.

I'll take you on your word. It just seems an odd way to teach. I guess I'm just too stubborn to learn a new way. That being said...i will point and laugh if I see flying elbows of someone doing the; 'cause I'm a steering snob. Lol

Seriously, anyone out there put off or confused by my snobbery...i apologize. These guys know what they're saying, even if they are a little odd. *wink*

Odd, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. You were thinking in terms of steering wheel movement, my technique focused on hand placement...both end up accomplishing the same thing to move the trailer.

If your way works for you, good. My technique is just another way to make the trailer do what you want it to do.

Elbows flying? How could that happen if the wheel is only moved a quarter turn... 90°? Its a teaching method.

I am A-D-D and this is how my granddad thought me to turn the wheel it makes more sense for me to put my hand at the bottom of the wheel and which ever way you want the trailer to go that is the way you turn the wheel. It might not work for some but I fully understand this way instead of at the top and which ever way you turn the trailer will go the opposite.

Mental note: No jokes for this lot, even if marked by a wink and lol. *ahem*

I apologize for any misunderstandings. I will now go back to silent reading.
