Thank you so much I have so much to learn. I will be starting school at NuWay next week and was told they are the top school to be recruited from.Do you have any thoughts on this? Because here I am trying to decide if I should choose TMC or Maverick when I'm not even sure I'm going to get an offer. Do newbies always get an offer from the good guys as well as those that don't have such a good rep? And am I being bold thinking I will be working right after I graduate? With the way the economy is today has the trucking industry been slowing down as far as new hires? And are they getting pickier as to who they hire? I have , according to NuWay a great shot at getting a job right away because I was at my last job for over 28 years, have a clean driving record and am healthy other than slight hypertension. So assuming I do well at school I'm being told I will have no problem getting hired. What are your thoughts, because this is too big of a decision to make based on a NuWay recruiter. Also, one last question. What method do drivers use for directions?
Thanks again for the help

Howdy, ive been reading your posts and your last Q.
What method do drivers use for directions. Man I hav'nt laughed so hard in a long time, thanks for that.
Its becouse ive been so LOST its not even funny, its kinda funny now but not then.
Ive never drove for TMC,some companys will get good directions and pass them on to drivers, some dont. Allways get the phone # and call the shipper or reciver hopefully thay will give or confirm dir. Some freight companys dont want drivers to call them and wont help with dir. Some have dir.on autio tape message, but thay talk so fast I hafta call back 10 times to get it all on paper, its helps if your cell phone has a recorder for this.
If you have afew $$$$$ theirs all kinds of GPS and mapping programs for a laptop. I dont have a laptop yet,I can usually get dir.I need on the phone if not I just call a friend at their house, thay lookem up on computer and tell me.
Ill tell ya 1 thing about TMC, thay have some fine looking trucks
379 Pete"s so if ya get lost, atleast you'll look good wile your driving around looking for the blankin place.
Ive been so lost their should be a word for it,well i think their is but ya cant say stuff like that on here.
Good luck to you Vaded, thanks again for the direction Q. -

Wow, I would have thought they had a better directions plan to cut down on gas $$$. High tech trucks, no tech directions, seems kinda unproductive. Guess I'll have to invest in some maps, a compass, and a bibleGetting lost sucks in a car let alone a semi.

I dont drive for the large companys anymore, the ones with quail-com or some other satilate system on the truck, but when I did the company would have to pay "by the letter" for sending info to the truck, so the ones I was with would "I know I cant spell this right" abreaviate all the dang words for the directions. And you would think thay would have made up an abreavition guide so everyone would know how to translate. But NO that would make sence.
Your right the fuel price should help for sure, and like I said I dont know anything about TMC other than their trucks the 379's are sharp.
Their to slow for my preferance but thay look good. -

This is like asking someone with a Masters or PhD, what High School did you attend?
I know it is important to you and you should get the best training possible. Once you are out on the road only your driving skills count, not where you got them from. Every company is going to consider you a newbie.
If you meet TMC's and Maverick's hiring requirements there is no reason for you not to get a prehire letter from either or both. Prehires really don't mean much, only that you have passed an initial screening. In my case I had a prehire from TMC before I even started my CDL School. If I were you I would submitt application to every company you are interested in now.
There is no reason for you not to be at orientation with TMC the Monday after you graduate from your CDL School. Maverick might take a little longer. Just remember because you are attending orientation does not mean you are hired. Orientation is where they are looking at you to see if you meet company standards. You can be released at any time, including the last day of orientation.
With the economy soft as it is, trucking companies have an over abundance of drivers wanting to get in. They can be more selective.
High Blood Pressure is a major concern. You need to get it under control not only to be hired, but for your health. If you cannot get a Medical Card because you are disqualified High Blood Pressure you cannot work. Without a valid Medical Card your CDL is not valid.
Take steps now to get your Blood Pressure under control. You say you have a "slight" problem. You should be able to control it with exercise and diet. There are some natural remedies available. In all cases you should follow your doctor's advice.
Directions have been covered. A current Motor Carrier's Road Atlas is an abolute must. I use a Garmin Nuvi 660. It is not perfect. It is expensive. If it stopped working, I would go buy another today. You need a cell phone. -
After much consideration and research this is where I am at tonight:
Going through NuWay sounded good at first, but I just couldn't swallow paying $6200 at 18% interest. Several companies up here in MI were basically in the same ball park as NuWay but always had a different twist. In the end, the outcome was always going to be the same, I was going to have to be with a company that would pay it back for me for a long time or end up paying it myself which would total nearly $10,000. So I looked around and I found a school in Kentucky that charged $3500 which included a bus ticket, room and two meals a day.
I asked all the right questions, and they appear to be very legitimate. My question is this and I will ask the company this tomorrow:
How can they afford to charge so much less for the exact same program that Nu Way has?
After 18 days I will come out with a CDL A and basically be a free agent, free to choose my path.
I was told it would not be a problem to transfer my Kentucky license to MI. Do you have any input or thoughts on this?
