    Hi,
I'm a new O/O and I'm really getting disillusioned by rates that Brokers are paying lately in the dry van market.
Been doing a lot of sitting because here lately I'm not even seeing rates on dry van freight that even match my
cost per mile. Luckily I own my truck outright but I still have bills and maintenance to pay.....

I do have possible opportunities to lease on to a couple places and either pull hoppers or flatbed.
Agricultural work is fun to me.....

Has anyone had experience in jumping ship pulling one type of freight for another i.e. parking the dry van?
What were some of the pitfalls?
    Was the move more profitable?

Give farm2fleet a call if you want to lease on with someone. They have a thread here on TTR if you want to read about them.

Get your broker authority and cut the brokers out.

Insurance carriers don't look kind upon OOs with broker authorities......you may want to re-think that

Remember that it is Febuary, the slowest time of the year. Rates are down all over. Stick with it and just wait it out. Also, when rates pick back up (and they will) remember this time and stash a little more away.

Why would the insurance carriers not like that?
It seems as long as you have all the Bonds in place they wouldn't care if someone is a broker and O/O.

    ZJXander and 6wheeler Thank this.

Before you go get a new trailer, give power only a shot. Carry 10 2" straps with ratchet binders on them (a few logistics and wire hooks doesn't hurt, either), and you can pull almost anything in that market. Even with trailer loadout, you're getting an extra $150-$400 on top of whatever the broker on the freight pays, and you're not racking up miles on your own trailer.

If you just don't like brokers then get a few hundred business cards, throw on a suit, and start knocking on some doors. Plenty of shippers are sick of brokers, too, but can't find trucks otherwise. I've already had a few this year begging me for back solicitation.
