You definitely get what you pay for with a lot of things in life. Trucking GPS units are no exception.

I went for the top of the line, and i couldnt be happier.

Im pretty sure what your going to say, but was it worth the extra $$ for the 7" screen? But, I figured if I could get a good deal on ebay, etc for even a bit older one it would be worth getting to try it out.

Started with the garmin 430TL, there first truck specific unit... still performs wonderfully... updated every quarter.

As was previously stated, they all use navteq base maps, for the ACTUAL navigation part. Each company adds their own User interface, and points of interest onto them, along with other bells and whistles.

The ability to understand how to set up the navigation to suit your needs is cruical, and that is where the differences between the units become apparent. And that is all in the user interface. Personally, I will never have a RM, hate the UI...

The Gramin line is easier to custom program, and has served me well in the oil fields, on lease roads.

For each person it comes down to which user interface they prefer, that gets them from point A to point B reliably. They all get their data from the same source.

Its worth the money for the 7" screen. You will have a much better experience with it and happy you did. After a few paychecks the hit you took purchasing it will be all but gone.

I told myself a long time ago that i intend to get 1 year of safe driving under my belt. I am pushing 9 1/2 months and i owe much of that to my decision in purchasing this device. It makes your job easier, and you feel secure knowing you are in good hands with it. I have had a lot of co-drivers and they all had different truck gps's. They all sucked man. They either crashed too often or took you down roads you shouldnt go down. They were crap.

The sense of security i have from owning the RM 730 is worth it alone.

The RM 730 and Dezl 760 are (were) both $400 units. The 760 has been marked down because Garmin has released the 770 (also $400).

If memory serves, the 760 had a few bugs in its firmware about a year or so ago. They were fixed, and new firmware was released within a few weeks. That could wekk have been the cause if the performance issues you experienced.

FYI, RM units have had their share of bugs, as well.

Does anyone know if the Garmin Units use WIFI? There are some great deals on ebay for GPS Units...Garmin Truck Units...RM 520, 530, 720, 730's. Are RM and Garmin really the only two players in the truck gps game?
