I I was under the impression that a CDL would transfer from one state to another... Is that incorrect? I am in the process of getting my CDL now (testing this week) and live in Florida but we might be moving to another state in a few months...

Will I be required to retest in the new state???

You will make $60K+ per year driving tankers. With Trimac you can make $100K+ in 2 yrs. if you qualify by their rules.

As far as transferring liscense to another state, some are simple such as the DMV just does the transition on the computer and some states like Illinois make you do the road test, pre-trip and everything over again.

Lots of oil field drivers have been posting recently they're looking for work outside the oil fields because the jobs are laying off by the thousands.

@Chinatown ... Thanks for the info... I will contact the state we are possibly moving to and see just how they handle the transfer... Again, thanks.

So even as a recent graduate I would start out at 60k+ driving tankers with my 166 hr. school and plus all my endorsements?

And as far as the companies you listed, you recommend Trimac for the best long term career and salary potential? Making a $100K+ a year after 2 yrs? What do you mean if you qualify by their rules? Also, what kind of work is this? Like delivery to gas stations or driving oil/gas from point A to point B long haul over the road?

I looked into Schneider Bulk and Trimac Transportation and their websites. Checked out their job postings and employee reviews (they both have some good reviews and some bad reviews from their workers).

Didn't submit an application or anything because I am not sure if I should wait until I receive my Tank/HazMat endorsement (just filed paper week last week so it may take 2 to 4 weeks)?

Do you think oil fields will pick back up in a few months? And even so, would it be better in the long run to start out with one of the companies you listed above rather then some random company on an oil field trying to "strike-it-rich" short of speak?

It looks like drilling may start up in N.C, wonder if I should consider that?

I guess my game-plan here overall was to work as many hours and earn as much money as possible for the next four years. After that, find something with daily home time (or at least weekends off) etc.
With that in mind, what could you offer some suggestions to get me on the right track?

    Thanks

Don't send resumes out over Craigslist posts. Make sure that you get a actual brick and mortar company with a contact name & number before you send anything.. I learned this the hard way in 2009 after I got laid off.

With all those endorsements you'll be able to do whatever you want to do. If I were you I'd want to drive in interesting parts of the country that are relatively stress free and have good truck stops. To me that's central and northwest US....southeast through Kentucky to the Carolinas is also pretty good. Not sure I'd want to be strapped to an oil tanker or water truck and driving the same country path 14 hours every day no matter what it payed when I could be cruising beside a big river in Montana or parking at the TA in downtown Nashville and walking to Printers Alley.

If you're single and want to run you can get the big loads driving for a bunch of companies....it makes a big difference if they know they can just send you on the best paying gig and not have to route you back to the house.

You never have to retest with a CDL, not even written. You will have to pay for the licence and all endorsements, just like you tested again. So a couple hundred bucks to transfer. I have had mine in Louisiana, Maryland (twice), New York and Florida (twice).
Got it back in 91, so moved a bit lol.

I almost did this for a few jobs listed in oil field states (promising high pay and benefits). May I ask the hard lesson you learned from doing this?

Yeah, that definitely sounds nice seeing the country with easy stress free driving (I want to avoid major cities for sure). Sounds more enjoyable too then driving the same dirt path back and fourth 14 hours a day. However, if the difference is making around 50k vs 85k+, I would rather drive that same dirt path over and over I think. I am indeed single and have nothing holding me down, which is why I want to spend the next four years working hard same saving so I can settle down with a family in a few years and buy a house and maybe have a little extra to buy my own truck. What companies do you recommended for someone with my game-plan?

Yup, the Valley is still here and I've lived here my whole life, but looking to start trucking and making money.
Could go into a little more detail as to what LTL is?

Well, that is good to know I wouldn't have to retake everything. But could I still "live" in NY and just say I "work" in another state or for the time being until I know where I want to settle down?

LTL is less than truckload and its where the money is for the most part.Do you wanna make 30cpm OTR or 52cpm as a LH LTL driver home weekends ans maybe during the week.
look into Estes,Old Dominion Freight Lines,ABF,Yellow/Roadway group,NEMF(starter comp) ect.
