My Dad took this photo up around Cloverdale, CA if I remember right. Early 50s. Lumber was coming into Ventura, County from Eureka, CA. about 650 miles 1 way. You can see the butane tank for the Hall-Scott. Guessing a 590, probably no more than 200 HP. Hallscot.jpg 3 spare tires! Had to be a tough trip...

Looks like a mid-50's GMC. The cabover was called "Cannonball". Anyone remember the TV series "Cannonball"? Here's the intro, but there are several episodes with lots of older trucks. Also, one of my favorite trucking movies was "They Drive by Night". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umvbqPUMoKg

westcoaster.jpg Early 50s Westcoaster. The fellow that owned this unit also owned the Mack seen earlier & a Pete, all hay rigs. My dad & the uncle seen with the Mack worked for him, but not very long. Dad said he had good equipment but every paycheck "bounced". Guess thats how you make truck payments!!

HD-41B.jpg View attachment 80022 )I did NOT haul this one. I hauled the blade & rippers & cab of the 1st D10 I ever saw up to a vinyard near Fresno. After I unloaded I pulled ol Blue in front of the blade of this Allis Chalmers HD-41B & got this shot with an Instamatic (wish I'd had my 35mm then). 22' blade, 16V71 Detroit ( 2 v-8s joined inline). At the time there were 4 of these & 4 D-9Hs ripping the ground for grapes for as far as you could see. Ground was shakin!! 1984 I think.

I have a friend that runs a dozer out of the Twin Cities. Runs some pretty big equipment. I always thought of doing that, but I ran some equipment for the asphalt company I worked for, front end loaders, shovels, and stuff, and IDK, it's actually a pretty boring job. Back and forth, all day. Truth be known, I had a lot more fun driving a truck.

I hear ya Semi, With the type of hauling I did, there was always an oppertunity to run equipment, usually at the end of the day when everyone had gone home. Cutting grade with a machine & putting it on a trailer is totally different. I really enjoyed running a crane. I got some time in on some of the rig moves we did in the 70s & early 80. I really liked the 50 -60 ton conventionals with the draw works right behind you. But, one should do what one does best& my place was in a truck.

    "semi" retired Thanks this.

Yeah that HD41 is bigger than a D11. I had to go to New Mexico last summer to pick up the blade, arms and ripper so that they could haul the rest of the machine. The blade was 20 feet wide and 7 feet tall. The ripper was a single tooth ripper and that tooth was 9 feet long so it would go about 8 feet deep into the ground. Got to the delivery site and told the guy I had his arms, blade and hillbilly ripper. He said "Hillbilly ripper?" I said "Yep, it's only got one tooth." He got a good laugh out of that. That is a 53' trailer all the stuff is sitting on with a 10 foot upper. Give you a perspective of the size of this thing.

One thing for sure, those big dozers do some damage. I was watching a guy on a big dozer with a ripper blade taking down a line of trees, and some were pretty big. I was impressed. One thing, you don't want to get one stuck. There's not much bigger of a machine that can get you out. I saw a guy got a D9( or something pretty big) stuck, and had a heck of a time. Lot of smoke coming out of the stack on that deal.
