Its the world we live in. The government is requiring that new trucks have all the emissions crap to the point that you can't work on them on the side of the road anymore. Mack seems to have come up with a solution that minimizes time spent on the side of the road and a tow bill. The last 8 years I have seen more and more maintenance going to the dealerships. Many Superior terminals have minimal shops. High Point has one of the best but they don't even swap out turbos on the newer ProStars anymore. Everything goes to the dealership these days anyway.

They just paid to have my Prostar towed from Charleston WV to High Point NC last week to replace the turbo. They towed me a day cab to deliver the load on time. That's how you keep a 99% on time delivery stat. Our TM didn't want to have it worked on up there in Charleston because of the shops reputation and the likelihood of a 2 week turn around time.

All you have to do is look at the cars from 30 years ago, went thru the same thing, manual carbs to electronically controlled carbs, EGR vavles, Catalytic convertors, then on to throttle bodies, now direct injection and drive by wire.

I'm just glad it will only take trucks 10 years to get there instead of the 30 years it took cars.

How many new cars do you see anyone working on besides a dealership?

In the end you will be running an 11 litre diesel putting out 500 hp and when empty will cruise on half of it's cyl. getting 12mpg, the ONLY problem with this whole scenario is, it will be/is painful and expensive getting to that point, the only good news is, I think they are over halfway there and on the downslope, with the worst of the problems behind them.

Yep. The days of breaking down on the side of the road and 3 truckers stopping with their tool boxes to get you back up and running are over for more reasons than the quality of today's hands.

Hi wsyrob, that's true, but the fact is, back then, one of those 3 drivers usually had what it took to get you going again. Today, all you need is a cell phone and some extra lights.

That was my point. The trucks are getting too complicated to work on anymore.

It's an information asymmetry problem now. As long as truckers can't read the computers, and know if a problem is an easy fix or not, the maintenance guys will have you by the balls. For instance, that SCR problem could have just been low DEF fluid. If the trucker cant read the message right, he's gonna go into a shop waste his time, waste money to pay some clown to put in more fluid, they'll make it take 2hrs so it seemed like a big deal, and then you'll be happy because you didn't know what happened but thought it could have been catastrophic if the computer didnt tell you to go get serviced.

i like the tech part and had a 13 volvo 730 with that feature but it never did break down , my 07 volvo 780 was a different story as it lived in the shop .
both trucks were a dream to drive but my 07 can only be described as a volvo shop tour truck and i found very few volvo shops that gave a dam about timely service or doing the job right the first time .

    the dealers at :
joplin mo ..A-1 best ..job done right on time everytime .
carlisle pa ...was good and job done overnight .
phoenix az ..got me right in out .
peru ill ..was competent but i thought all day to do a starter was a bit much .

omaha ne shop was a complete horror story everytime .
all others not mentioned due to space and blood pressure going up .

parts availability was always an issue and prices were a little high to say the least .

I see your point but don't think its entirely that bad. In this case the problem was run through the company shop first. David got a call before the truck threw a check engine code at him. Something as simple as refilling the DEF tank would not have needed the service call. In any event the repair is approved above the driver level. There will have to be some documentation of what was done by the shop to Superior Carriers and there are people in place who will monitor those costs looking at the fleet as a whole. If its a big tin foil hat worthy conspiracy the maintenance costs will rise and they will see that and go back to fixing it when it breaks on the side of the road. This is much more driver friendly and since I don't pay the repair bills I like the sound of it.
