I replaced a 10 speed with an 18 speed a couple years ago. My bill was just shy of $10,500. I got some core credit out of mine, you probably wouldn't get any core. My clutch did not get replaced. My work was done at Rush in Nashville so high labor rate, but they did an excellent job.
Replace transmission & clutch: $16,000?

Well, they had to shorten the drive shaft and the original shift lever didn't work so they had to use a new one and modify it. This is time and expense. Also, there was a wiring issue caused by a half-assed repair before I owned the truck that left me unable to bump up the idle speed when the parking brake was applied. That was hours with several techs trying to troubleshoot.
Still yet, talk about getting hammered.Lone Ranger 13 Thanks this. -
Way high to me too. But let me tell you, when my alternator failed in Texas. TA asked me $500 just for the part, I kept driving because my truck has APU, even the power goes down, I can stop, start the APU and charge the batteries, so went to Freighliner - Dallas. The alternator price: $175, if you return the core. Replaced the alternator on the parking lot next to the store, 4 bolts and 2 cables, 20 min.

I stopped at Peterbilt in Richmond, VA. I bought a new alternator for about $158. They were busy all day. I put it on across the street. I told 'em I would have a problem getting the pulley off. The parts guy said they could handle that. I tipped the mechanic $10 for using an impact wrench to take the nut off the shaft so can could get the pulley off. The mechanic resisted taking my money , but I insisted. So that's what I spent. It was summer. Midday. No shade. Had to sit in the shade pouring water on my head to avoid heat stroke.
