Replace transmission & clutch: $16,000?

    When you swap from say an eaton 10 speed to an eaton 18 it's not too bad. Of course drive shaft needs worked but most everything else lines up. Spicer is a different animal, most of the time the shift tower is just off enough to make you pull out your hair. Seems like the rear trans support has to be moved to work with an eaton. Which requires drilling the frame to move the L shaped supports that the rear support rides on. It honestly does seem a little steep but without seeing the invoice and the job before and after to see what's involved it's hard to say

    I'm gonna open a shop. Gonna specialize in alternators and transmissions. Maybe sell some batteries and burritos on the side.

    Buy a tranny, get a free burrito. Maybe 2 if I'm in a good mood.

    I bet that shop goes through alot of grease, . And it's not to lube the trucks!!

    That's ridiculous. A have paid $98/hour. But I've been off the road 3 years.

    I need to raise my rates. Never done an IH, But in the fall I did the same swap in a 379 Pete. The only fab work was the driveshaft. I'd have to pull paperwork on the exact number, but it does seem excessive. I hope they gave you an itemized bill and not just a blanket number. I'd like to see the parts to judge fair markup or not

    In Dec, 2014, put a reman 13 speed Eaton Fuller (flex unit without bell-housing $4600) in with new manual clutch ($800), rear engine crank shaft seal replaced and rear engine structure removed/resealed and all parts, hoses, fitting. $75 HR labor. $7625.38 total out the door. Labor rate is discounted because this Freightliner does all my work (mostly the big stuff). Transmission and internal engine work is best left to the experts and I am no expert. 2006 Century/DD60 14L

    Yeah, my old Spicer had no core value, which is why I paid $6500 for the tranny alone. No upside to this, got to suck it up and move on. Doubt there is any recourse except never to go back. Any suggestions on a good shop between Reading and Harrisburg, PA?

    I think we're making the OP a little nervous here. It does sound a little steep. Man, I sure am out of touch as to what things cost now, compared to 20 years ago. Glad I'm out of that racket!
