So after 2 months of OTR reefer, I've been offered a flatbed job. Better pay, nicer equipment and, most importantly, I've said since school I want flatbed, not van or reefer. So I am wondering what stuff I need on hand above and beyond my otr road kit? Specific tools, safety gear, etc.

hard hat, saftery glasses(unless you wera glasses then side shields), saftery vest and steel toed boots. you also will want to get a strap roller, they are about 25.00 but well worth it
-
Winch Bar and lots of gloves. Don't get too crazy though, i know my place will cover anything you need. Always better to spend someone elses money
damutt Thanks this. -
yep, i did forget a GOOD pair of gloves, you will wear them out FAST

Minimum 6' step ladder, 8' is better. I liked to have some 1" tie down straps along side bungees. Sometimes you want to roll a tarp really tight and you can strap it as opposed to trying to use bungees. (to keep it rolled)

Define good gloves. Like am I looking for impact or cut resistance?
-
You will go through lots of leathers gloves, keep in mind cloth gloves don't hold up past a day.The_Dude Thanks this. -
Sweet, thanks guys. Any other tips you would like to add while we are here?
-
More tips, hmm let's see.
Always have the fork lift operator lift your tarp rolls onto the load. (Strap them there) if only weather protect. Keep your face away from winch bar.
don't jump off trailers,
never turn your back on a pipe load,
learn proper strap and chain throwing techniques,
check securement every time you get out of or into the truck,
learn proper tarping techniques, nothing worse than being the truck with the shoddy tarp job.
I could come up with lots more tips, but that would prove I have OCD.
Also, if you been bumping docks with refers and such, you should really amaze the steering wheel holders in the t/stsavory Thanks this. -
Tarping isn't an issue with this company, it's 95% roll tite.
What do you mean by the bumping docks means amazing steering wheel holders?
