I am getting ready to get out of the military. I have a NY state CDL with doubles/triples and tanker. I am moving to VA shortly and my goal is to get on a LTL company. My problem is I do not have a hazmat endorsement. My school instructor told us we should wait to move before applying for hazmat Since it does not transfer over.
Not having hazmat is hindering me going foward with my application. Getting a VA license right not is not possible. Should I go ahead and get a NY endorsement? Get pre hired then go though the application again? Would LTL companies hire someone with an out of state license?

I don't know the right answer but I would call the companies you are thinking of applying too and see what they say.

I have been there too. Got the hazmat endorsement on my Georgia CDL before I left to go to North Dakota to work in the oil fields. Got pre-hired. Once I got there and got hired, the company I worked for said I had a "short time" to get my CDL changed over to North Dakota. Hazmat didn't transfer over to North Dakota. Had to go through the hazmat process again. Problem is the hazmat process cost money. But having the hazmat on my GA CDL helped me get the ND job. I understand your situation.
I think your decision should hinder on how long you actually plan on staying in NY before moving to VA. You might have to bite the bullet and do it twice like I had to. -

Hazmat in NY is going to run me $160+ for fingerprints and background check....test etc. One of the reasons I have not done it yet. I heard it was cheaper in other states.

Have you called LTL companies to see if they require exp? Here its a yr exp.You should talk to the company first. They may see your NY hazmat and still not go any further with the application process.

your should be able to transfer your hazmat as long as you have your original approvable letter from Homeland Security. It would also benift you to get a TWIC card , Plenty of local LTL companies , do check out beer, food service (Sysco etc) and beverage companies, most pay well and they are local home everyday, some are even 6 or 10 wheel trucks,,who cares how big the truck is as long as it pays

One I talked to today said "we have 5 positions open right now" you could tell he wanted to work with me, but but #1 he could only hold a job offer for 30 days and policy is no hire without hazmat. Told me to call back when I am closer with hazmat. -
