    Two answers:

I am paid well and I work hard.

But... we are paid the same amount any day we work. Many drivers take advantage of that and have earned themselves a slacker reputation.

Dispatch is thinning the heard now that everyone is on elogs.

My experience with people working for and with me.
There are some who have their lazy groove and that is it , money cant make them hard workers.
Some , very few work hard no matter what task they are given , they just get on with it.
Most work harder with a carrot to go for but not necessarily better as they often just focus on the carrot and not how they get there.
For instance drivers may chase miles if paid by the mile even if it is detrimental to the truck or load.
Hard working conscientious people who work for the good of all are gems and should be treasured.
Just throwing money at people to get them to be good workers is pointless.
Good people are good and bad people are bad.
If you pay well you will just have more choice and happier people.
To have happy good people is the ultimate.

I had a friend who was a receiving clerk / stock controller.
He landed a 2 year job in Qatar when they were building a big gas to liquids plant as a materials controller.
He was on a 8 weeks then home 2 weeks home rotation.
He was over the moon , his salary was 5 times what he was used to making.
When at work in Qatar they gave him a villa , 3 meals a day and a new Jeep to use all free fuel with no back charges.
All was great he could not stop saying how lucky he was whenever home.
Then about a year in he found out that the 5 other guys he worked with doing the same job were earning 30% more.
He says he could not help feeling robbed.
Point being , perception of being appreciated is very important.
I employ drivers in Africa and we are probably right at the top of the Heep when it comes to what drivers earn and we have no problem recruiting or retaining drivers but by American standards what we pay would be near the bottom.

Right. If you don't like the pay, so you use that as the excuse to slack, you hurt productivity and profits, so they don't have the resource to increase pay, which leads to the age old question,"Which came first...the Slacker or the Cheap Pay? Anyone that says they would do better if they were paid better is deceiving himself. If you could do better, you would do better and would either lead to either an increase in pay OR better employment.

Getting drunk ink once doesn't make one a drunkard. Slacking once doesn't make one a Slacker. I've said before that a top driver will earn 1.5-2x the same money than average and how it's not one big difference between the top driver and the average driver, but a million little differences. A Slacker doesn't slack in 1 big way, but millions of different ways. Slackers
    1. Don't G.O.A.L.
    2. Trip plan
    3. Do pre trip and post trip inspections.
    4. Don't sleep when they're supposed to be sleep and therefore can't drive when they're supposed to drive.
    5. Are the last to show up for work and the first to leave.
    6. Will tell you "not my job" when asked to do something small that would help their job, yet they complain when they get the paycheck from their job.

So, if you are a Slacker, and you don't like your pay, when are you going to realize that it's you that's keeping yourself trapped in that vicious circle?

He said he would find another job, he didn't say anything about slacking. Finding a another higher paying job is one way a person can better himself.

No. Someone that's focused ONLY on their salary is going to start slacking sooner or later, regardless of what you're paying them...as you can never pay them enough to keep them happy. That and that's the kind of employed that's just going to jump ship and go somewhere else everytime a gig comes up that's paying a few extra cents per hour or a fraction of a penny more per mile.

After reading the first page & the last I think I am like most. At any job I have had I work as hard as I can to make a name for my self as a good/great worker just the way I am. Good pay is nice and as someone said you know what you are making when going in. If you don't like the pay don't start or move on after some time in, don't job hope.

Yes I am new to truck driving but other jobs I have held (computers 15 years) my contracts have been extended way past my end date, (HVAC) I made foreman in 5 years of 15 at that job too. I have been known to pick up a broom just to do something as sitting around just does not feel right but I am not a workaholic on speed either.

At my job now we start at 7:30 but I have to wait for my stop tickets to be dropped off. My truck is PTI by 7:15 so I can roll at 7:30 and sometimes the tickets don't show up till 8:00 and that just kills me! Getting paid to sit around is not me.

It boils down to the individual but I can tell you on my job hauling woodchips you can tell the difference between the hourly paid guys and the percentage paid (or other types of pay where you make more money if you get more done) at the chip dumps.
The hourly paid guys are never in a hurry and some are downright slow as all get out while guys like me who want to get that next load in asap hustle and get'er done as quick as possible.
There's little to no incentive to hustle if it pays the same to take your time.

There are definitely pluses and minuses of hourly pay. Some guys will really milk the clock. The way I look at it...sure...I want to get my hours, but I like my home life. I want to get my work done in a reasonable timeframe and get home.
