I agree, get some time and experience and a better understanding of the business side of things. Don't rush into things, research everything

wait till the end of the year when the insurance regulations MAY be decided.

if fmcsa gets its way. it could be a whole different game at that time.

Sounds like you might not be old enough to get insurance. How old are you and then maybe you can get some answers.

you know at 18 you can only get intra-state. most if not ALL ins companies(small and large) require 21. def agree with earlier posts. get to KNOW the industry. i have been doing my reserch on getting my own rig for a while now, still not done.

i wouldnt buy a truck that needs work right off the bat, sounds like a lemon to me

Well, there in lies your problem with the insurance. Don't know anyone that will insure an 18 year old driver.

even with car ins you pay out the nose. better wait till your 21, and save up for a better truck

I think it would give him some good experience if he fixed it himself with a mentor that would be willing to watch and teach.

As far as buying a truck that needs engine work, that does not make it a lemon. What that means is that you have to get it at the right price. If you are a good negotiator then you can get some awesome deals.

I would rather buy a truck at 30k and put 50k into it than buy a new one. Resale does not mean squat to me. The truck I drive today is 18 years old. When the engine goes, it will get another.
