so all in all you earn the same if not less money overall pulling a reefer than a dry van.. no wonder Shaffer is reluctant to allow drivers to switch to Crete lol.

That appears to be accurate so far.

Thats exactly right, why would anyone stay at Shaffer if they could switch to Crete and make the same.

Now in fairness to MOST reefer companies, reefer drivers run much longer loads and a lot of coast to coast. Something obviously Shaffer doesn't have a lot of. If you were running back to back 2,000+ mile loads frequently with Shaffer it would be a lot more appealing, but the constant 600 mile plus loads are far too time consuming.

Those "MOST reefer companies" don't start anywhere near .48

I agree with this post also. The Shaffer Ops manager I spoke to claims their reefer freight averages around 100 miles per load longer than Crete's. I'm not experiencing that so far.

That may be true but they also don't have stripped down trucks like Crete/Shaffer. For some people having basic creature comforts has a BIG value too, as well as running long loads over dealing with shippers/receivers every day.

I know firsthand quite a few reefer companies offer all kinds of amenities like TriPac APUs , inverters, refrigerators and such. Hell Magnum has that and built in Garmin GPS in there Petes as well as being satelitte radio ready with Bluetooth. They start at .42 with experience but also have an additional performance bonus that can put you at .50 a mile and have a great time off policy too.

Believe me when I tell you I thought I'd be the last person to defend pulling a reefer, did that my first 3 years and haven't pulled one since, but I love running coast to coast and you won't find that at too many van companies. I've been giving lots of thought to reefer to run the way I like AND have a nicely equipped truck too.

Bottom line is cents per mile isn't everything! ... unless you already have a new loaded T680 and can hand pick your loads, lol

With long haul reefer you normally have enough time on loads that you can somewhat regulate your sleep schedule and keep down the frequency of inverting the sleep schedule. So I would rate the quality of health and safety as being similar to dry van and much better than what I'm experiencing in short/medium haul reefer. However, some of those "long haul" Reefer companies have plenty of not-so-long loads as well and tend to pay a good bit less. For example at Lessors, they gave me all the short loads and gave all the long loads to Joseph.

well when I was in "training" with Shaffer I had multiple coast to coast runs. I'm talking even Cali to Delaware in 2 1/2 days :biggrin_2552:
They save that stuff for teams I guess.
I made money at Shaffer but hated my life and was always exhausted. Now I'm picking my loads, chillin in a 680 and all is well.
