You are pretty much correct.CF would lock the first trailer solid to the tractor,by using a very long slide type 5th wheel device. The reason CF did this was because of the Pennsylvannia blockade not allowing double trailers in their state. When they locked the front trailer solid to the tractor, they were no longer a set of doubles. They became a truck and trailer that was "legal" in Pa.The little hunk of I-90 in Pa. kept CF's doubles from running legally from Ca. to NY. and New England.

A 46 KW. Back in the late 60s & 70s this truck hauled produce from Santa Maria, CA into the LA produce market 5-6 nights a week. The current owner (who also drove it and was one of my mentors) still takes it to some of the local truck shows in central coast area of CA. Has SC350 & 4x4 if memory serves me.

I drove one very similar to that in the mid 70s, hauling bulk cement, only it had an A/C on top that did not work. I recall one late summer very hot afternoon I had unloaded at Little Rock going back. Both windows rolled down, the wind coming in seemed to come off a clothes dryer, sweat running off of me. A pretty new conventional KW with the windows rolled up was passing me in the fast lane. I looked over and it seemed his windows were frosted over from all of his cool air, them even more sweat rolled down my forehead into my eyes, it was a long trip home.truckdad Thanks this. -

Is that one of those lowboys with the tires all the way across?Always wondered, how do change the inner tires on one of those lowboys?

Doug, These trailers are called 16 tire "expandos" used primarily in CA. Murray & Cozad are the most popular. Two short axles on each side spread apart from each other from 8'6" to 10' wide by 2 air rams, 1 in front of the axle group & one behind the group ( back ram is in an enclosed 1' sq box tube. At legal width CalTrans gives us approx 54K, open the back up to 10' wide & we get 60K. & that gives about 2 ' of space to pull the inside tires. Years ago, I pulled a Beall 7x set-up that did not expand that had 16 tire groups at 8' wide. These were a little harder to change the insides. We ALWAYS kept new tires on the insides on this unit.

An early 50s IH with a load of liquid sugar unloading at the Safeway icecream plant in LA, May 59. My dad took this pic. Note the long stack, they hauled a lot of freight too. side note, If ya'll ever see the freight/produce hauler with CFL on the door from Arroyo Grande, CA, dark blue with red & white, CFL is a spin off of the Co. that owned this old IH, FTS or Fitzgearld Trucking Service from Oxnard & Santa Maria, CA. In the early 60s the freight rights were sold and the new co. became Certified Freight Lines. I think they recently changed the "certified" part in the name. FTS retained the sugar haul from Betteravia, CA. I drove for them for a few months in 1987. Just a little history, sorry for the rambling...................
