I know what by-pass is, I own one. It's hardly complex. FYI, most OEM filters are about 30 microns, by-pass is about 2 microns and very restrictive, thus they can't possibly replace OEM filtration, all of the oil flows thru the by-pass after about 2 hours of operation. The oil film between bearing surfaces are about 7 microns. This is why by-pass can significantly reduce engine wear.

FWIW, I have an OPS with its 4-micron filter (came with the truck), but I'm very interested in Dice's extended oil change intervals w/o bypass (better?). So far his samples look every bit as clean as mine so if he can accomplish the desired result (safely extending drain intervals) with less cost & complexity then that's something to be proud of. It certainly isn't the mark of a Rutherford lemming.
Now if the 4 micron filter sees 6 gallons per hour and filters 50% of 4 micron particles and the 15 micron CAT filter sees 100 gallons per hour and filters 2% of 4 micron particles -- what percentage of 4 micron particles have been filtered after 1 hour (assuming a 10 gallon capacity)?
(6/10 * 50/100) = 0.3 or 30% for the bypass
(100/10 * 2/100) = 0.2 or 20% for the OEM Caterpillar filter.
Golly gee, lets all run out and pay $650 for a new OPS-1 and $40 extra every filter change -- all so we can filter 10% more particles per hour that are too small to do any real damage anyway.
Edit: actually it isn't quite that simple because you add a bypass system on top of full flow, so you'd really be comparing 20% oem 4-micron filtration against 50% oem+bypass (20% + 30%). Still, the difference isn't nearly as drastic as it sounds on the radio or at the MATS booth -- at some point your filtration is "good enough" and additional gains are just a waste of money...Last edited: Apr 5, 2015
RedForeman and blairandgretchen Thank this. -
I asked what a full flow system was, not what a by-pass was. I also don't own a CAT, so the by-pass works for me.
Your numbers seem bent in your favor, (50%), you should inquire, maybe KR could use a technical ###########, ah, bullcrapper, lol. -
Davidlee Thanks this.

If it's the same Dice as I remember all those years ago, I wouldn't call him pro-KR at all. Closer to anti-KR. But he was pro-Micro Blu. And pro-broker bond LOL.
sdaniel Thanks this. -
Who sold him the 220 GPH unit anyway? Driving for fuel economy, there is no way on earth you would even need half of that for the power he is using.
Seems like he now have a clear understanding of their operation, and now realize that he might have been misguided at the time of purchase, as there was no need for the more expensive unit.
I wonder what's with the collection of pump motors? -
I think, on newer engines anyway, pump size has more to do with OEM fuel pump return rates (to tank) than HP.
-
Test cell data on my 3406 fuel rate was 21.8 GPH
The standard 150 gph aux elec. pump is plenty.JMon Thanks this. -
Well Detroit had Davco redesign their filter system just for the DD15, the 482/483. It's rated at 180 GPH.
