2290 is $550 a year, but it is prorated. At this point, you won't owe much. I believe you do need an EIN. It only takes a minute online.

Yes you will need to register for an EIN number. You can do it on-line or at the IRS office. On-line is very easy. Then you will need to pay the pro-rate of what is left of this year ended June 30th, 2015. It'll be around $125 or so. Then on or after July 1st you will need to pay around $500-550, depending on your truck's GVW, for the following year (July 1, 2015 - June 30, 2016). I did my Landstar orientation in Ft. Worth, TX so I registered on-line for my EIN and then the next day I went downtown in Ft. Worth to the IRS office and gave them a check and they stamped my paperwork as paid, which is what Landstar will need to clear you for orientation. Be prepared to wait forever at the IRS office. They all move like they have a broom up their rear. They close at 4:30pm but don't want to take you after 3:30pm because they all have a furious desire to be out the door at 4:29 and 59 seconds. You will leave there feeling like you work for them and not the other way around. Anyway, you can avoid that whole circus by registering for your EIN two weeks before going to the IRS office or paying a vendor on-line to file for you, but I didn't have that option. I wanted to roll immediately. The IRS will only accept personal checks. No cash, no visa, etc. So user friendly that crowd!

Looking for any BCOs that use load boards and brokers outside of LS. A fellow BCO I've ran into says he has done it before. He negotiated a rate off another board and called an agent he's worked with and the agent ran it thought the Landstar system.
Anyone doing this often? Any advice? Got an agent that's been helpful you can suggest?
I haven't tried this yet, and will probably get a load board subscription if it's working for others. I feel like I'm doing all the work for an agent, but when a good paying load on the board is going somewhere that has 0 loads out, I'm desperate to try something else. Otherwise I got a long deadhead.
My problem is LS has a lot of one way freight on their board and I have to call separate agents for loads that don't seem to need the board. They'll have freight just sitting there, or agents have their own wait lists of drivers coming to the area or already waiting in the area. -
Ive done it before ..But, i have an express agent who I know and trust and have met here near home ..
On a side note .most freight is one way freightLast edited: May 1, 2015
