I think, when censoring a word or someone, context and meaning should be observed.

Everything is out there and public, no matter what measures to take to hide it.
There will always be a trail back to the source, if one digs deep enough. -

And no I did not click that lol -
Based on the above data rates, let's see the cost for 1 driver.
4GB per hour. That is 111Kbits, constantly (although on a modem or phone it would be usually shown as 111Kbytes. Does not matter)
100Kbits is a lot for a cellular or typical non-802.n wireless connection. It's a disaster for satellite costs.
So for real time video, unless it is compressed and made crappy and lower frame rate, it's eating a lot of bandwidth, and don't forget there would be two video streams.
4GB per hour
96GB per day
35TB per year.
1TB disks are the best price point for assembling RAID for servers.
What is the bulk cost of 1TB disks?
About $75 each in quantity
35 of them filled each year, per driver. $2625 per driver just for hard disks that last 5 years on average before failing.
sure they could do backup on a 10 day cycle but then could not go back a year to scrootinize the poor driver with some idiotic thing, without reloading lots of tape.
1000 drivers at swift? How should I know.
So it's $2,625,000 for the disks.
They move it to backup on tape. Have to or run out of space. So now a couple of IT people have to be hired to maintain those additional servers and infrastructure, and also enlarge the server room and the contract with Iron Mountain. Whatever that already costs, to buy the DLTs (tapes and drives), which are about 800GB each, so 437 of these $70 wholesale computer tapes would be needed per driver per year.
Just $30,625 per driver per year for that. 1000 drivers? Ok $30,625,000 per year.
Of course they could just pull and store the 35TB disk arrays for less cost, maybe $2,625,000 per year for the 1000 drivers, but it's not done that way in the computer industry and can be a risk the device might never come back up. "stiction".
And don't forget the additional data costs. That is 1000 additional 100Kbit streams. Say $20 a month each, in bulk, so it's $240K per year to move the data from the trucks to the server.
Add 20% for downtime, repairs, disasters, etc. (I didn't add it here)
$30,625,000 DLT storage media (I didn't count the tape drives)
$525,000 for $2,625,000 disk storage on servers, with 5 year life. (didn't count the cost of the server itself, or power, IT persons, HVAC, etc.)
$240,000 mobile data costs (didn't count the 100MB data service need to be added, actually 250MB due overhead)
=========================
just call it $32,000,000 per year cost.
Are they going to really archive all of this?
even for half price/outsourced? $17M?
Then double it back to $32M, because of the items not included as above.
There are probably ways to cheapen it as well. I'm not getting paid to figure it out in so much detail here. Just gross costs.
The corporate lawyers will weigh the cost of avoided lawsuits. How much does the company pay to "victims" each year? -vs.- system cost.
Doesn't really answer any questions. -
dаmn....... well it seems i can say it i guess i am more awesome

Of course Swift isn't going to live monitor all drivers, that would be silly. FACTS are there will be somewhere around an hour of video on the camera. This video CAN be viewed. They can do it without the driver even knowing.
Bottom line is not what they CAN do, it's what they WILL do. It's also not a matter of will they now. The same way you boil a frog in an open topped pan. -
Well it's official. I'm out. Going to orientation with a new company on Monday May 11th. Just need to craft my resignation letter. Not certain who I should send it to though.
SouthernLady, Lone Bear and freightwipper Thank this.
